(I asked in general maths, but decided this would get better responses)
Hey, I am not so great at maths.

Prior to the trial exams, I was ranked 4th in the class (this is a pretty low-ranking school, I was roughly scoring from the 70's - mid to high 80's.) However I just got back my trial paper, 47%. The class average was 47%, but i know of at least 4 or 5 people that scored in the 50's, 60's and one in the 80's. I'm guessing that my ranking will drop way below 4th. I'm guessing I would currently be sitting at 7th.

I am currently putting in more effort and getting outside help in maths so I hope to improve my mark, but will this ranking going into the HSC effect me?

Thanks.

Your final rank will.

If you mark affected your rank overall, yes it will affect your HSC

It will obviously affect you, it is the trial HSC examination. Use this mark as motivation to kill the HSC exam.

Thanks for the replies.

How exactly would it affect me? No matter how I do will it bump the 5 or so people up? will I be bumped down depending on them?

Well you can't change your internal mark (school mark) as you have done all your test in school. The only way you can improve your mark compared to the others is the HSC which counts for 50% of your HSC mark.

Scalling doesn't apply internally.

Internally, all you want is the best possible rank you can get. The worse the rank the worse your ATAR will be (in most cases).

All you can do now is kill the externals

Thanks for the replies.

I've definitely been neglecting maths by putting a focus on my english and history units. I'm going to put an extreme focus on maths for the next 2 months.

Thanks.

Is Multimedia a going towards ATAR course?

Just wondering because you either need to study maths hardcore, or drop it because I assume you are doing better in your other subjects and maths is taking time away from them.

Yes Multimedia is an ATAR course. I wouldnt want to drop a subject this late, seems like a waste of two years. Also Multimedia has a major work that I've been doing for the past year.

One last question:
I've been thinking about my 47% and have been wondering will this 47% contribute to my Atar, or is it just my rank?

Clarification: I did bad and if this 47% is worth half of my atar, that would suck. But if it's just your rank that's worth half of your Atar, that wouldn't be so bad.

If anyone understands what i'm talking about, which one is it?

If that 47% was a mark for a school asessment it won't count towards your ATAR at all. Only your school rank counts towards your ATAR as well as the mark you get in the externals.

Thats a huge relief. I'm guessing that the rank is what goes to the Atar?

External mark and internal mark it is 50/50.

You internal mark is moderated according to your externals
This. Whatever you get in your externals counts for 50%. And then you get an internal mark depending on your rank and how your class goes in the externals which counts for the other 50%.

You're ranked 4th to 7th - that's not so bad, unless of course the class has seven people!

You should do fine. Just work on maths and try to do better in the HSC itself to nullify that mark.

There isn't a need to understand how scaling works - in the end if you did well then you would be rewarded with a great mark.

I dont quite understand. Say I score 80% in the externals but come 5th and the people ahead of me score 50%, what happens?

It's a really shitty school, Class average was 47% (my mark so I cant really complain).

if maths is your poorest subject, then dont worry too much. it wont end up counting since u do 12 units. yea you've been doing it for 2 years and hey if u still wanna do the hsc exam on it then go for it, but dont devote too much time on it and neglect other subjects. better to have 10 units in the 80's and one in the 60's then all in the 70's.

It's a really shitty school, Class average was 47% (my mark so I cant really complain).
For example:

John got 90% in internals and ranked 1st

Susie got 80% in internals and ranked 5th

But:

John only got 60% in the externals and got the 3rd highest mark

Susie got 85% in the externals and got the highest mark

Since John was ranked 1st internally his internal mark will take whoever came first in the externals. So since John was ranked first internally but Susie got the highest mark of 85% in the externals - John's internal mark becomes 85%.

Basically whatever you are ranked internally you will received that same rank's mark for whoever got it in the externals. So if you come 5th internally you will receive the 5th highest external mark no matter who got it (from your school of course).

Well, what happens in this scenario:

Keith internals = 90% Rank 1
David internals = 80% Rank 2
Lisa internals = 60% Rank 3

Lisa externals = 91%
Keith externals = 87%
David externals = 52%

Does that mean list gets 52% even though she performed best in the externals?
