I'd really like to go to UNSW for combined Commerce and computer engineering (or computer science) but the atar even with bonus marks might be a bit out of my reach (91 if i can get all bonus marks and im looking at mid 80s i guess). First question is does the commerce/computer science course have hsc plus? I cant find it on the website. Additionally i read a thread from a few years ago saying people got into that course with a lower ATAR then what was published - does that still happen?

If i dont get the required ATAR for UNSW what would be a better choice, UTS or Macquarie? UTS has business instead of commerce and if my only focus was commerce id go to macquarie but since the computer engineering or science is what i will be wanting to get a career out of i guess UTS would be the more logical option considering its connections, right?

From what I've heard, Business is really no different to Commerce, but I may be misinformed. (That is UTS Business is only abit different to USYD/UNSW Commerce). 'It is similar in format and structure to a B.COM' (Quote Wikipedia LOLOL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Business).

UTS and Macquaries are stereotypically known to 'specialise' in Business/Commerce areas so I would have to say its your own preference. Whatever fits your degree preference is obviously the one you want to get into.

In saying that, the degrees are supply/demand. If per say someone who is offered the degree chooses an alternative root, you may be next in line for the course. Apply for the degree you want the most in your UAC, because its go by list of offers and you only get 1. You don't get offers for 5 degrees at once and you get your pick (Again, I may be outdated because thats what my bro advised me). I hven't entered my UAC either, going to do that later =\.

Yep - it's under 'B Eng Bioinf, Comp or Soft' here: http://iaro.online.unsw.edu.au/pls/non/hsc_bonus_points.main

Happened last year - although for the people I know, they were quite close if you add on the bonus points (within about 1 or 2 ATAR points) and they got high eighties. Whether it happens this year depends on the demand I guess.

Yep - you only get one offer (you can change your prefs for 'second round' and 'final round' offers but that's a little risky)

Yeah ive heard all of that as well, the fact that its called a bachelor of business sounds a bit dodgy though lol. But in actual fact that cutoff at UTS is higher for the combined course then it is at Macquarie. UNSW will be my first and second option and if i dont get in there i will likely get my 3rd option so i will need to be careful about what i choose.

Really? Because B Eng/B Commerce has its own field on there with a lot of options and id presume there should be one for B Commerce/B Science as well.

Oops, should be B Eng / B Commerce then. UNSW's system is weird, because computer science is grouped with all the related degrees it is also under the Faculty of Engineering, even though it's listed as a science degree.

Ok cool, thanks. Im fairly confident i can get the 5 bonus marks under that criteria. But it'd be good if physics or chem were there too incase i miss out on one lol.

I guess ill have two UNSW preferences at the top, and as a third have two UTS options and then the Macquarie ones? (followed by UWS at the end incase something goes horribly wrong haha) Seems logical to do it that way since UTS cutoff is higher then Macq and Macquarie doesnt have a proper engineering faculty etc. Also even though Macquarie is closer, UTS is very convenient to travel to.
