I think the reason I feel so much compassion towards refugees is because my parents came as legal migrants (on a plane, not a boat) to Australia (from Nepal), having almost nothing. they also had three children with them (including me) and lived in a shit ass apartment. whilst my mum was at home with us, my dad went and worked his ass off and got a degree, got a great job and then my mum did the same. now we live in a nice house, go to good schools & are so much better off than my relatives who still live in Nepal.
all I'm saying is that migrants + refugees can do really good things for the country, if they work hard (like my rents), and can contribute to the economy well... and not be a liability.

It's a fairly robust environment here, I wouldn't be deterred by the reaction you just got, almost all those who attacked you have said worse to each other and if you hangs around you'll pick up the nuances of discourse in this place pretty quickly. For the record they didn't come down on you like a ton of bricks because you cared, the main thing was they resented the inference that foreign aid/government intervention is without doubt useful in alleviating poverty. I believe it is and support it but there is ongoing debate about it and ways in which it can often be counter-productive, legitimate complex arguments and you were seen to just sweep them aside under the guise of "caring".

I like to imply otherwise a fair bit for fun, but believing in free markets isn't inherently selfish and greedy. Your comment about importing people to resolve the ageing crisis similarly begged the question of whether increasing youths through one way or another is a sustainable solution to the ageing population crisis. Again it is an ongoing debate, you are definitely wrong but the way you just stated it as an immutable fact wasn't going to impress folk who have debated that very issue at length.

Finally, when you accuse people of essentially being selfish to the point of causing famine they are going to react with a degree of hostility. What you said about their morality, however much I agree with it, was more brutal than the barrage of Malcolm Tucker style vitriol they shot back which whilst profane was hardly deep and incisive.

Aren't most coming here because of the warz we caused in their countries and our attractive yet highly unsustainable and detrimental entitlement system?

This nation is founded on immigrants and immigration, they are KEY to being able to sustain our current standards of living as our population ages.

Who the fuck is going to look after your parents and grandparents when they can't look after themselves?

Who is going to staff hospitals, and treat the sick if we don't have any new parents?

Who is going to start businesses, employ people and sell things people want?

This country is great because we have a boon of natural resources yes, but we have to have SUSTAINED HUMAN CAPITAL to take advantage of it.

Without growth we may as well all go back to living in fucking caves.

also can someone explain the advantages of offshore processing over onshore processing? And why are asylum seekers in detention centres for so long? Surely it doesn't take that long to decide whether the person is a legiut refugee or not?

Offshore vs Onshore pros:
currying Law & Order votes (you appear TOUGHER ON CRIME vis a vis onshore
(some people believe) it is better for social cohesion/reduces social unrest to offshore it
possible to circumvent human rights obligations (by offshoring to countries that either don't have strong formal human rights legislation or do not enforce it)

Offshore vs Onshore cons:
Costs a fuckton more (community detention is 5 times cheaper than detention centres which are 5-20 times cheaper than offshore processing
Difficulty in negotiating international agreements
Onshore provides local jobs

Depends where they come from and if they brought any documentation with them. Security and health checks are done. Sometimes security checks can take forever (however, in a study of the records of 21,000 security checks, only 2 people were found to have failed the test completely). Sometimes determining status can take forever. The system is also prone to bureaucratic gridlock etc. So it can take years, or 4 weeks.
