I got an ATAR estimation today from my teacher (i'm roughly 25% through my entire HSC course- still have trials and ext. exam to go) and the estimation he gave back was an 88. But the course that I REALLY want to get into is around 96-97.

Quesiton is: can I get raise my ATAR by almost 10 points in 4 or 5 months?

I am also attempting the same thing. :) Remember an estimate is an estimate. It hasn't happened yet.

First step: You might want to change the username. :)

Yeah, there was a guy that got estimate 97.something and got 99.70 - I would say that since it was at the top-end of the ATAR scale, it's probably about the same difficulty as jumping from 88-96/97.

If you work hard, there's a very high chance that you'll get much better than your current marks.

Yes you can. Remember you've only done 75% of your HSC. One of the hugest mistakes made by students is underestimating the importance of the externals.

good luck!

An ATAR estimate is just that - an estimate. They are often unreliable and inaccurate, even when done by your school. Schools are often the most unreliable, as they give you lowball estimates in order to scare you into doing more work (or because sometimes they have little clue how the ATAR/HSC marks work). Another thing you have to consider is that you are only 25% through the year - a lot can change from here on out.

You'd be amazed at how true that actually is in many cases.

My school tried to convince us that SOR I scaled as much as 4 unit maths. They had this statistic form which was really deceptively written to show this (so many people fell for it).

A lot, the exams are worth 50%. In my year, quite a few people bombed out in the finals and others came out of nowhere.
It's 40% for most except Physics. :/ Anyway at least I have some sort of hope.

I was coming in the middle of the pack before trials in extension one, but got ~79/84 in trials with the second highest mark being ~70/84, and I was second after trials. (but my HSC exam mark was equal with the guy just below half-way, and my HSC total mark was at the bottom of the top half. Lulz)

So yes, it can change a lot (but also not).

My SoR2 teacher tried to convince me that my 86 counted towards my ATAR. Lol.
It was the lowest out of all my marks except Engish (has to count) and MX2 (it's fuckan Mx2) and she wouldn't let it go until I told her she was right. Fuckan insane. Lol

(and it scaled considerably lower than my English (Standard) mark, which was a fair bit worse. Lol)

What if we don't do good in trials and kill the externals or the other way round?
you're fucked.

Pretty much, come first or second and either be really competent yourself or make sure the people coming 1st/2nd and 3rd are.

same here really want to improve my atar. i have been looking at atar calculators and while im sure they are fairly accurate i cant help but think they may be a bit generous to subjects which do not scale well. i do std english and general maths (unfortunatly....) but on atar calculators they do not look too bad. can someone tell me about the atar calculators as an estimate?
