Politicians have the power to scre up everything up and damage the economy too - and whilst I don't agree with the liberals opposition to everything they're doing what they think is best to protect their interests.

I think people have the right to strike, people want to protect their livelihoods, just as I think people have the right to protest to protect their interests. I don't buy into this whole protect the economy at all costs mantra.

Besides aren't the liberals supposed to support individual freedoms?
What I don't understand is why we can't get rid of unions and just use individual contracts. If you commit to a contract, you should see out that contract. There should be no lines to dispute the contract unless there has been a breach by the employer.

Unions essentially circumvent this by striking once in awhile to improve their conditions and generally there's no grounds to refuse. Look at Europe. They are in the shits right now because they have no idea what the word 'budget' means and they are more than happy to pander to people with the desire to bankrupt their country in their own interests.

Unions are a big fuck you to society and they are a foul organisation.

I am generally supportive of labor policies over liberal ones but I find the current ineffective and paralyzed (apart from the taxes, I like the taxes) and have pretty much sold out over social justice issues (gay marriage, asylum seekers etc).

I also never forgave the greens for opposing the original ETS, single minded principle over sensible pragmatism.

So Australian sex party for me (I wish I could vote for tony Windsor though)

Cannot agree more. I hate unions so much. I work at Big W and they are such a pain, because of them my working conditions are so restricted as a child.

During Christmas, i cannot legally work more than 8 hours and I would want to (just to earn a few extra dollars). (plus the SDA is very left winged, and they fund stupid lobbby groups to oppose legalisation)

Working hard will get you better contracts and working conditions.

Working shit will get you a shit contract

Thats how it should be

We tried that. It was called work choices. It didn't work. Well, it worked for business, it didn't work for employees.

Even if we accepted this whole contract thing, shouldn't that mean things remain as they are, fixed? Therefore policy changes such as the ones the teachers are protesting about shouldn't be allowed to occur. Oh wait? You mean the business wrote into the contract that they could change anything at will but the employee wasn't allowed to write in such a clause for themselves? Oh of course that's fair.

Also, generally, (this teacher strike being an exception I admit), unions strike when re-negotiating an agreement, i.e. at the end of what is effectively their contracts. Indeed, for employees covered v the federal act employees aren't even allowed to strike until an agreement has ended, so it's not like their asking for more halfway through an agreement.

No, I meant that I did 38 hours a week. But I wasn't allowed to do overtime due to the Big W EBA agreement

Ummm, SDA is actually one of the most right wing unions there is. They control labor right, they oppose gay marriage and they oppose abortion, doesn't sound so left wing to me.

Also, lol, do you honestly think you or anybody is that indispensable to Big W that you would get better conditions? HHahahahaha, you guys are a dime a dozen, you'll get bare minimum and if you don't like it they'll get somebody else who does

If its anything like woolworths you can do overtime, they just have to pay you extra for it (and rightly so)

My Store manager was like, I wish I could have you in more, but if i did I would in trouble with your union.

Such a pain I wish i could of done extra hours.

If its anything like woolworths you can do overtime, they just have to pay you extra for it (and rightly so)
Not during November to January. It is in the EBA agreement.

Of course. But the voting takes place during school. So i can't really attend meetings etc.

And also, the SDA is very secretive, they never tell us when stuff happens

It didn't work because Australian's have been programmed to think that they have a sense of entitlement and any backwards trend in personal welfare is absolutely abhorent. If an employer feels that they can find a better way to co-ordinate their resources to achieve their aims, then they are entitled to do that. I hate that attitude that Australians have when their jobs get cut. They need to get into their heads that they are NOT needed. They are a drain on the business and keeping them serves no purpose.

A contract is indeed fixed and should be set for a given period. When it is up for negotiation, they can civilly discuss new terms. Why unions find the reason to strike every time they need to re-negotiate an agreement is beyond me. They can't accept that the role they have in the economy may have diminished (for legitimate reasons) so they feel they can hold greater society hostage for conditions they don't deserve.

Wut? No, it just wasn't liked. There's a difference between being unpopular and being ineffective. Most fatties don't like exercise, but that doesn't mean it won't help them lose weight.

Personally, I believe employees have the right to strike and form organisations, but I also believe that employers have the right to fire useless, greedy or lazy employees.

Bring in some more Chinese labourers. They always work hard and don't kick up a fuss.

In order to be a member of a union you have to pay a fee. How would you like it if the Liberals charged you a yearly fee just for your right to vote at the next election?
