Hey guys,
I was just wondering what rankings should I be looking at for an atar of 99.95? I'm currently in Year 11.Ranking of the school last year was 51 because it offers IB so not as many people do the hsc.

English Adv. /160
Eng Ext. /50
2U Maths /50
Physics /60
Biology /120
Economics /17

Also if you have any advice if I should take on Ext 2 English instead of Economics?

Thank you :D

top 1-5 for each subject.

Do whatever subject interests you more, as it will likely score you the higher marks

Given your subjects and school rank, I would say that you would need to be ranked between 1st and 3rd across the board (expecpt maybe english where top 5 might be enough). Any less and your chances seriously diminish.

okay, thank you ! at the moment I'm rank first for most of the subjects except eng adv. where we have people that have published books so that should be okay I guess.

My school is in a similar situation in that it would be ranked much higher if the IB scores were counted. You can't say that if they were combined, it'd be top 20. Rankings are supposed to reflect the quality of the HSC candidature, not the teaching staff. The two girls schools that offer the IB in Sydney are ranked in the 50s and 60s. Thus, you'd definitely need to be first in each of your subjects as the dux of those schools would typically receive around 99.8.

It's late and I hope i'm coherent.

Good Luck!

1st in almost everything - clear 1st in multiple units possibly.

At a rank 22-ish school, a 99.95 was: 1st and state rank Chemistry, 1st and state rank Biology, 1st Modern, 2/3 in both 3U + 4U Maths and top 10 English.

While at a top 5 school, a 99.95 was: 2nd Phys, 3rd Chem, Top 7-8 3U + 4U Maths, Top 7-8 English (where there were 4-5 state ranks).

English Advanced for both.

And keep Economics, it scales really well. If anything, pick up Ext 2 English and drop Biology.

I'm first for bio,eco and 2u maths and third for physics (trying to become the top rank after yearlies) and top three for both adv and ext if i keep it at that will that be sufficient? Btw thank you :)

Its hard to say - I think your ranks are high enough but it will really depend on the externals.

Tbh, I'd say 1st in everything because you aren't doing any extremely high scaling subjects (LIKE 3U/4U MATHS).

Personally, I don't think it's enough for 99.95. At a rank 51 school, I'd expect a 99.95 to first in every subject and especially for those subjects and even then, you still might not be good enough.

So I'm guessing at a 90-100s ranked school, you should only be first in every subject?

For school rank 51, I'd say first flat across the board.

Just re-read the first post - the OP originally said they went to a school ranked 22 so my answer was based on that. But if the school rank is 51, then you would definitely need 1st in all subs.

Unless your school is top 20, 1st in everything mate. Only about (can't be bothered looking up number) 50ish of the top students get a 99.95. Often 99.95ers will pick up at least one state rank in something, or obviously just do very well in all 10 units if they don't.

Fair call, apologies for the misunderstandings.

But I'm sticking to my guns here. I was top 2 in everything (except English where I was 8th in a cohort with 4 state rankers and 4u, where I was 8th~) and I was one of the two who got 99.95 in a top 3 school.

With this sort of thing its very hard to determine ranks needed for 99.95. Even if the OP comes first in all their subs its still a pretty long shot for 99.95.
