So I'm only in Year 10, capable student, and I really have my heart set on medicine (not influenced by parents).

I think it's achievable, but I'd like to help my cause as much as I can. Don't want to get to Year 12 and my HSC and realise I could've benefited by doing UMAT preparation or tutoring in Year 10.

So my questions are basically based around tutoring, I'm looking to do some UMAT preparation, should I start that now, or not worry about it until next year?

Also, just in general, I have a Maths tutor (1 on 1), but I'm not getting too much out of it at the moment, would I benefit from joining a tutoring school/class and doing a block of Maths, English and Science? (I'm not as strong in Science as I am Maths and English)

I'd like to think I'm capable of 4 unit maths, but not sure if I can set myself up for that without some extra work.

Thanks heaps.

Also if anyone knows, this isn't as important, but what is a realistic HSC mark to do medicine? I heard you basically need 99.6+ to have a realistic chance at getting into any uni, even though they are advertised lower.

Yeah sorry I think your right, a friend of mine is doing a GMAT for another course, not sure what it is. I'll edit that.

But wow, that's interesting with UWS...

Dont be decieved by the cutoff, for medicine (at all unis except UWS, where the ATAR cutoff is only considered once), you need to have an ATAR of 99+ and an extremely strong UMAT (Probably 85th+ percentile) to be really competitive. As I have said before on these threads, medicine is extremely hard to get into (much harder then most degrees) and the job is often not what people expect. The vast majority of people who try out wont make it, and many of these people who dont make it in will be high achievers.

Also, it takes many years of training (10-15 years) before you are qualified and in that time, you will be working extremely hard and wont be earning a great deal of money.

As everyone mentioned above med is extremely difficult to get into and if you have no interpersonal skills, forget it cos they do an interview.
One of the guys at my school got 99.6+, had a great UMAT but he fucked the interview and got rejected. Be prepared to get for rejection and plenty of backup options.
Theres pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, veterinary science etc. You may wana look into preparing for STAT as well

I heard you cant get into dentistry from high school and that you had to be post-grad, sit the gamsat and only then will you have a chance of getting in. Is this true?

Yeah, I'm not surprised...

Anyways, lets start with some answers!
UMAT Preparation - Yeah, very important and you should start preparing in Year 11 (enjoy Year 10)....
Maths Tutor - 1 on 1 and group tutoring are both good but it all depends on the individual... I prefer group tutoring because the competitive atmosphere (exam marks and requirement to get high marks to stay in the top class PUSHES me) is beneficial.
English Tutor - 1 on 1 (most recommended) or VERY SMALL GROUPS (3-5 students)! English tutor is beneficial because you have an extra person that can help you edit, mark or contribute to your essays and writing pieces. (also beneficial if you have a crap eng teacher)
Chem/Phys/Bio/Science - Yeah tutor helps..... since you're weak at Science, go for it!

However, it all comes down to you and no amounts of tutor can help you get 99+ if you don't put in the effort.....

Enjoy your last year of freedom! And you may want to decide whether you still want to do med after going to those uni open days and stuff. Have you by any chance done some research on this course and what it involves?

i am in the EXACT SAME PLACE. year 10 wanting to get into medicine.

From what ive researched the minimum atar to get into UNSW is 96, but thats with AN EXREMELLLYYYYY high umat. I do not think a umat course will do us any good, apparently, textbook learning is just as good. What sciences have you picked for year 11? biology scales low, but will help you slightly in medicie, though i decided against it because of scaling.

Good summary =]. I have quite a few Year 10 students on a waiting list to start English tuition in 2013... Must be 'Year 10 curiosity season'!

biology isn't really going to help with medicine to be honest, only do bio if you like it/are good at it, not because you think it's going to help. physics/chem are way more helpful

also you're not going to get into UNSW with a 96 ATAR, 99 would already be in the bottom 25th %ile in my opinion
