okay so basically we have an assignment to finish and i literally can't get a start on this question.

"How close might the pKas of the aspartate and lysine side chains alter if the two side chains come in close proximity in a folded protein and form a salt bridge?"

all i know is that the aspartate side chain is negative and lysine side chain is positive, allowing the whole salt bridge thing? i think?
could someone help me out with this?
thanks

Wouldn't the pKa in each become smaller/larger (go to 7)?

I don't even know. I just wrote random stuff on my assignment when I handed it in.

EVERYTHING!

It's not. Our labs go for longer because we have shit added ontop of yours. They expect us to know calculations we were never taught, etc. It's terrible.

I don't think so. I think we're only scaled up if we get 75%+ raw.

THEY LAST LONGER THAN 4HOURS? HFS. i walk out crying by the end of 4 hours, wtaf. what the hell do you do?
but for the calculations i dont think we were really taught either. they dont really seem to thoroughly teach the practical stuff huh. and the tutorials are really fast paced for dull headed people like me =(

Talk about life. Is it precious? Should abortion be legal? Should euthanasia be legal? Etc etc.

No, but you guys should be able to finish within 4 hours. We *just* finish.

They don't seem to teach anything well, they just tell you what to expect, but not how to deal with it. They over spoon-feed so much that they don't spoon-feed at all. :/

sometimes if we're lucky we finish early, but it's draining all the same. brodda i feel for you. but what are the benefits of taking advanced? surely there has to be some or people wouldn't be killing themselves.

Well, if you take advanced now and you love the subject then you wouldn't be in regular going through shit you find incredibly trivial and boring, also, if you want to major in it you wouldn't get to second year advanced and be punched in the guy by how much more demanding it is.

oh goodness, i have no plans whatsoever on taking mblg1002. but this is exactly the same thing i said when i took bio last sem. i found it pretty stressful at first because i had no science background knowledge whatsoever but i ended up liking it. but omg mblg is so intense compared to sem1.
im just taking this because i heard it opens up a lot of units in second year. so hopefully ill be able to just get through it.........even if i have to drag myself across the finish line.

are you planning to take it in second year? if i end up liking it....and doing alright.....i might actually consider it =/

There's no 1002. Lol
It's just 2nd year MBLG and biochemistry.
Yeah, I'm taking biol1903 first semester next year because I heard how easy and interesting it was compared to everything else. MBLG is a big step up. :/

I might take it next year if I do well and like it.
I was supposed to take it because for medsc I'd have to take the second year units, but now I'm swapping to advanced science I might not take the second year units.

What calculations are you talking about? Most of them are pretty simple.

i thought 1002 was the one in second year? or maybe not...
1903? human bio? i realllyyyyy wanted to take that first semester but i got so freaked out on the first lecture so i dropped down to biol1001.
medsc jesus christ. my friends also changing to science from medsc, she said it's too intense and can't take it.

not simple! for me anyways. it's from the theory assignment and it kinda made me rock back and forth in the corner when i first saw it.
the question is:
"How close might the pKas of the aspartate and lysine side chains alter if the two side chains come in close proximity in a folded protein and form a salt bridge?"

Here's a hint:

It's called the acid dissociation constant for a reason ;).
