Re: Year 11 2012 Chit Chat Thread

What were your previous marks?
75-80% and 60% for one :/

They've separated it into people who are automatically in
People who need to get 85 to get in
And people who are just rejected

:(

So close but so far. Just need to study lots of maths for the next 2-3 weeks

so they only consider 3U?

So if a person who was in the 2nd category got:
- 70 for 2U
- 85 for 3U

while someone else got:
- 100 for 2U
- 84 for 3U

The first person is accepted and the second person gets rejected?

What topics do you struggle with though? Yes focus on maths since your other subs won't really matter for year 12 I guess.

Yup, 2u is not considered.

I'm thinking their plan is to make a really hard extension 1 test and were planning to put the people in the middle category out all along :( :(

Wouldn't be too surprised if they did that. I mean the school wants more students getting an E4 in MX2, like how they want students getting a band 6 in every other sub, means they'll pick out the very best students.

My best advice is seriously, don't throw away marks. Making less unforced errors will make a BIG difference for whether you get 85+ or just miss out.

Re: The Nonsense Thread

Jesus Christ why is that last one 3 marks!?? Where did you get this??

Also, 2 cases.

1. Tracey is on committee.

John can't be in it, and Tracey is already in it (by definition of the case), so we have 13 people (7 guys 6 girls) to choose from and 4 spots, so 13C4.

2. Tracey is NOT on committee.

We have 6 girls (since Tracey's not in it) and 8 guys to pick from, so total of 14 choices, and we have to pick 5. So 14C5.

So total is 13C4 + 14C5.

EDIT: Fixed typo in final solution.

Why? Our school's paper.

And that's what I thought.

But answers says 15C5 - 13C3 = 2717.

Yep yep I had my working out right, but typed the "So the total etc etc" wrong, and you do indeed get 2717.

What they did was have the total (15C5) and presumably subtracted the cases when they are both on the same committee.

Oh haha - thanks heaps :)

Why did you get so flustered at it being 3 marks?

Also, we just proved that 13C4 + 14C5 = 15C5 - 13C3

And a combinatoric argument is quite often very successful in proving Binomial Identities, but usually a more advanced technique.

Because 3 marks is ridiculous for 1 line of working out. Would never happen in the HSC.
