Hey there,

After completing my first year this year my results haven't been the best as what they could be; due mainly to serious procrastination, no goals and general laziness. So in preparing for another year of university:

1. How do a improve my core skills? Such as:

Writing (should I start a blog? read more? practice essays?)

Studying (Should I re read basic course topics and study for next semester subjects?)

What things do you do to seriously prepare for uni?

I hope my question aren't too ambiguous, however I've always been an average student but I really want to develop myself into someone above average and seriously capable.

Thank you!

Knock these out with a little self discipline and you will improve.

Not really? If it's an issue with laziness and not the difficulty of the content then just suck it the fuck up and do the work.
The last part requires motivation, which the OP doesn't seem to have a lot of.

So watch some motivational videos or whatever it is that gets you off...? I don't know why the OP has such a problem with procrastination and laziness, but at the end of the day most people are lazy simply because they allow themselves to be, if you really care about your studies you need to get over the i cbf factor and just sit down and force yourself to do it.

Perhaps you're studying a course that doesn't interest you.. so that might be a reason for your average marks..?

If you don't particularly enjoy something, you'll need fairly strong motivation to keep doing it, in this case to put in hours and hours on end studying and what not. Figure out how much you like your course, and why you're doing it.

If you're a student with average grades, then either you can:

Work harder and know what you are doing, OR

Retain the same grades, but get involved in clubs and societies; employers look a lot on that esp. when considering job interviews.

But before all that, think about the purpose of why you are doing the degree. Is it to get a job that will give you high respect? for family? for money? If any purpose at all, then that should be some sort of motivation.

Did you have a career in mind after completing your current degree? Maybe that could be motivation for you - reminding yourself why you have to do this (study). If there was none to start with - if there was none ever, maybe it's time to make one/a few now before you begin to seriously study.

It's difficult to get into routine study after a year of slack, but you really need to sit yourself down, take away the distractions (switching mobile phone off, etc.) and revise/summarise notes/do whatever work needs to be completed. It will take a while to get used to this.

Edit. Getting a head start for your next semester subjects sounds like a good idea.

That's unfortunately how I got through Finance.

You couldn't have got into unsw if you are truly lazy, there must be some other problems that you haven't identified. My guess is because of a lack of interest.

If you want to improve studying and writing skills you should consult the unsw learning centre. The unsw counselling service also offer workshops for students who experience study difficulties such as procrastination.

Walking stereotype.

That's not true. lol

Although, I agree that they should have a look into the learning centre and counseling and shit.
