Hi everyone,
I wanted to do medicine and even applied at another state (JCU) and was told that if I attain a good atar I would be invited for an interview. So after my results came out, I was in shock as I pulled of a worst-case senario and attained an atar of 84.8. I wanted to become a doctor badly since I was young, but my dreams seems to be over as I did not do too well in the UMAT nor the HSC.
So I need some advice from students who were in a similar situation last year, or know friends who were also lost as me!
I'm now planning on studying either medical science advanced at UWS- after the extra 10 bonus point are applied or studying pharmacy at USYD after the 5 bonus points are applied.
I have a few questions:
1. Is it possible to transfer into medicine from both these courses and which course favours more of getting transfered?
2. How diffcult are the courses and what grades will I have to attain?
3. Is pharmacy a good course for career wise, in terms of job prospects and what about medical science? - I'm asking this as if I don't get the transfer offer/interview after the first year, atleast I want to have a good course that will gurantee me a career.
4. Are there any other courses that I should consider for pathways into medicine?

Thanks in advanced! :)

Do BSc(Adv) or BMedSc(Adv) at UWS. I know a few people who got like 70s in HSC and managed a credit GPA at UWS so you should be better off there than in USyd Pharmacy which is actually challenging.
Keep in mind that you do need a GPA of 5.7 to get into UWS though because your ATAR was lower than the 93.55 GWS cutoff.
Also, the cutoff for UMAT becomes lower for the top 6 in the BSc(Adv)/BMedSc(Adv) at UWS.

They're both pretty shit.
I would recommend BSc(Adv) over BMedSc(Adv) or BPharm

Thanks bro :)
But my concern is that only 6 offers are made each year for students considering this pathway, despite what course they do!
and plus will I still need to do the Umat again?
Also how diffcult is it to be in the top 6 for those particular courses, like what grades will I need?
How diffcult is Science Adv. compared to other courses and wht career opportunities does it offer, regardless of transfer!

Ye, I will consider Bachelor of Science Adv. over Medical or Pharmacy. Pharmacy seems like a good career, but the job prospects don't seem too good for the future and it would be diffcult to top pharmacy at usyd where there are like 100 nerds in the class rather than in uws right?
Plus if I do get an offer at uws for science advanced, will you help me out with textbooks and everything? I'm applying at campbelltown and will give it my 100% next year as I need medicine badly.
Thanks alot bro :)

pharmacy at usyd is just very hard in general ad you will be up against kids that did extremely well in chemistry and stuff. Plus shit job prospects. Don't do it.

I can't really. I didn't go there. I did get an early round offer there last year and I've received an unofficial offer there if I don't get into med (it was in the email about interviews saying if you don't get in but you apply for BSc(Adv) or BMedSc(Adv) you can get in straight away. But I don't think I'll do it. I'm already going into my second year Of BMedSc/BE at USyd and I don't want to repeat anything.

Just get a GPA of above 6 in sem one and then above 5.5 in sem 2 and above 147 weighted in UMAT and you should be good. ^_^

So you are doing Bachelor of Medical Science/Engineering at Usyd and got an unoffical email from UWS saying that if you did medical science adv or bachelor of science there, you would get into medicine after graduation?
Ye, So why do you prefer that I do B. Science Adv. over Medical Science Adv? I thought they were very similar!
Anyways, yer I heard that UWS scales the Umat sections in the ratio 1:1:0.5 ( sections 1-3 respectively) and this year I did very bad in the Umat, my scaled score was abt 132 :(
I might do umat prep course next year and study hard for the course. Plus I heard that UWS gives an I-pad this year so it seems like a win-win situation for me. Thanks alot once again :)
When I mentioned help, I meant like could I purchase textbooks and notes from you if I get an early offer so I can start preparing early!
Thanks once again :)

I'm doing BMedSc/BE at USyd, yes.
I got an email to confirm my interview for MBBS at UWS back in November and in the email they said that if I applied for BMedSc(Adv) or BSc(Adv) I was guaranteed a place.

MedSc is more specific to research-y stuff, whereas in BSc you can major in chemistry and stuff and be an industrial chemist and shit like that.

I didn't do any prep courses, I wouldn't recommend spending all that money if you aren't like rich, but if you are go ahead.

Yeah, I'm hoping to get that iPad too. Lol

I didn't get any textbooks except for one textbook for molecular biology and genetics that is specifically made for USyd. Soz.

k nice, ye I would consider B Science Adv now :)
Bro why didn't you go reply to uws email and do science adv there? you would've been guranteed a spot into med!
Any dw abt the textbooks... I will somehow get them off someone :D
And as for the umat training, I might nt consider it as m nt rich. It costs something like $500+ and I know who did it last year and got lower than me.
Thanks once again for all your replies, really means alot to me bro :) and gl with whatever path you want to take!

Safraaz, don't give up your dreams just yet. There are many ways of getting into Medicine - all is not lost!
I'm sure you'll study hard next year and get the marks you need to apply again.

Thanks alot :) ye I will try my best next year and hopefully all goes well. I wanted medicine badly, but its not on my radar right now :(
I guess I have to wait and see how things turn out and be optimistic for the future.
Thanks for the motivation though, it really means alot and yeah I won't give up on my dream just yet! :D

As others have stated it is harder to get the GPA required from pharmacy not exactly impossible but it is a steeper hill climb, but having said that sometimes people change their minds while doing other courses so yeh :)

Thanks for your insight :)
Yer, Pharmacy seems hard!
Could I do any other course and hope to transfer after attaining good grades?
Lets say I do Construction Project Management and then the Umat again. Is it possible this way, rather than doing medical science adv or science adv?

You can do any degree.

But for graduate entry you need to do certain prerequisites for some unis and should do first year science subs throughout your degree as electives for prep for GAMSAT.

Well as an honest opinion, i really think you should do something you like, unless you're very certain for med, like doing pharm or med science may help with some background knowledge, sometimes uni's don't accept the fact that you've done it and require you to do them again anyways. So yes its possible with other courses but i've never done it so i won't be able to give a definite answer

I liked doing Biology and Chemistry at school :) Although I didn't get the highest in them whilst compared to my other subs, I surely did enjoy studying those subjects and could last hours studying it. Where as I would just blank out in 10 mins in all my other subjects whilst studying them. lol
Thats why I want to do something in the science field as I know I would study hard for the first year! But my only concern is that what if my grades are low and then I don't do too well in GAMSAT after graduating! Will I have a good backup career in degrees such as medical science adv or science adv? or should I just forget abt medicine and do something new for a change that gurantee's me a good profession/career.
That is my major concern :(

I just don't want to waste my time and end up doing something that has no job offers!

If you want do get into research (like doing experiments to find out the answer to a question you have) then you need further study (PhD). Otherwise, you can do routine diagnostic work at a hospital, a sales representative for biomedical companies, a technical assistant for biomedical companies, a research assistant in a lab etc. Of coruse these are options graduates with medical/biology related majors.

Just spoke to my cousin who did bachelor of medical science adv at UWS campbelltown.
She told me to stay away from adv. science and medical science adv as it does not gurantee you a career at the end and hence your transfer into medicine or dentistry. She is now working at a pharmacy store sorting and packing tablets just like an ordinary person. She also said that UWS is not a good university if you want to do these courses and that I should be applying for Usyd and UNSW if I'm really interested in transfering into medicine. So now I'm really confused and don't really know what I should do! :(
