His point is that nature usually does things for a reason. In fact nature is SO smart that it makes 1~05 boys for every 100 girls to compensate for the fact that women live longer.

If you get too many men then they are going I start competing for women to replace with, this will inevitably cause social problems.
Ok what kind?

Are you dense or something? You're a man yes? I presume you will want to have sex at least once in your life? Imagine no matter how hard you try, no female wants to have sex with you because there's plenty of other men to choose from. Do you not think that that might upset you a bit? Or if it doesn't can you imagine having a friend who it would annoy?

Then imagine a few million of these pissed off sexless men, don't you think that just *might* cause some problems?

In that case, if something already exists, exacerbating the problem is totally fine.
yeah because allowing sex selection makes people want to kill and whore themselves.

being an econ student, you should know were all whores.

Yeah, exactly. But also being selective towards a certain gender would not be sustainable over many generations. Of course, that is a problem that only really exists if the same gender is consistently being selected by parents. The article mostly mentioned gender balance in families which is an innocent enough reason I guess, but it could still upset the gender balance. Ideally, like Tasteless said, in countries which allowed parents to be selective of gender there should be measures in place to prevent the ratio of new born's genders becoming skewed from what would be expected naturally.

Not dense just trying to generate a discussion. I honestly think that it's not a problem. If there is no women around go migrate somewhere else. And if nobody wants you full stop, maybe there's a good reason for it.

I can't get a girl now :( Might kill myself over it eventually, but that's my problem for not being attractive and having shitty social skills, so maybe I shouldn't reproduce in the first place.

If only it was that simple.

Once again, not a problem in here but the challenges are greater in the developing world.

what if it turns into a global issue though?

Doubt that it will but if it does, then maybe will have some Malthusian shit storm scenario that will put it all back to 50/50 or whatever.

People will still find ways for gender selection. I doubt it'd cause a huge gender numerical differences since there will be some who want a boy now and others who want a girl, it all depends on the culture and were definitely not going to end up like china or india.

In all honesty, I don't really think there's a real impetus which makes this worthy of discussion in the Australian context.

It's an ethical argument more than anything.

I just think it sets a dangerous precedent. If gender selection is allowed then what is stopping parents further down the line from "optioning up" their kid to be both the next Usain Bolt and Albert Einstein - imagine having to live up to those expectations. That's even forgetting the inevitable rampant genetic discrimination.

I love these things.

Going one step further, I'd love to see some human cloning.

I'm sick of all these conservative assholes opposing everything that would be a great feat of genetic engineering.

Or they can just abort the gender they don't want like in China or India.

Tbh I agree that it's pretty cool. I just don't want to be alive for (much of) the transitionary phase where only part of the population have been genetically engineered.

That's the only problem- some genetic discrimination.

However if that did somehow effect the life of everyone else, I guess non-genetically engineered humans could be compensated by their government. Like a genetic centerlink benefit or something (a long shot, I know)

But like you said, people are just losing their shit about the transitionary phase that would take place. There's nothing wrong with this field of science as long as it is ethical. And by ethical, I don't mean ethical in the sense of uptight conservative dicks getting annoyed, I mean in the sense of physical/emotional trauma.

Personally, I'd love to have a little louie running around.
