I think it all comes down to the fact that humans created faith, religion and god, to either control or have power over others or give them morals and a way of life. Also it irritates me when Catholics or Christians tell you to not take the bible literary, isn't that the whole outline of their religion? Also the bible has some very sexist, unmoral and just simply wrong teachings in it, and Christians keep contradicting themselves so much. For example "we are all equal", but "men were created first....".


I can't really speak for other religions, since i grew up in a christian family and attend a Catholic School I know quite A LOT about the Bible. (and have a lot of frustration and negative feeling towards it) lol

Anyway, i have not heard a single valid argument or a reason why people believe there's God. (maybe i'm missing the point of life)

Most written texts are influenced by their contexts. As the monarchy was an important aspect of Shakespeare's time and location, many of his play's contain puffery aimed at kings or queens. Similarly, much of the new testament was written in a time and location where women had little rights. This accounts for the "sexist" aspect of the bible. Furthermore, the bible is filled with parables and poetry thats purpose is not to be taken literally, but for people to extrapolate certain morals or ethics from it. Hence, many "Catholics or Christians" suggest the bible is not to be taken literally.

This is a pointless argument. Regardless of whether god does or does not exist, people have their own opinions and beliefs which should be respected.

With that said, I think we should be critical of everything to a fair extent. We're critical of our own work, why aren't we critical of religion?

Just because it's religion, doesn't mean we exclude it from criticism.

Why is this a negative thing? Would you prefer them to follow the hard and fast principles of the Old Testament and commit murder and cruelty on a regular basis or apply modern values intermingled with the positive aspects of Christianity and/or Catholicism?

With that said, I think we should be critical of everything to a fair extent. We're critical of our own work, why aren't we critical of religion?

Just because it's religion, doesn't mean we exclude it from criticism.

As evidenced by this thread and the copious amounts of similar ones relating to it, there is no absence of criticism for religion in this country.

Perhaps fickle was the wrong word to use. But you agree that morality does differ on all scales, I.E. person to person, region to region, across space and time. The moral consensus on many issues in the western world has without a doubt changed dramatically over the past 100 years. Leads me to wonder what the mindset will be in the next 50 years, when our generation are considered as old conservative dinosaurs holding back ‘progress’.
