Look at asian countries-WHY ARE THEY DOING SO WELL?? They have a reason as to why!
In Asian countries it works the opposite way, the bright ones also go into teaching.
And teachers at selective schools need to have at least a masters degree or honours in order to be employed.

Agree with this.
The bright ones aka HSC high achieves all flock to medicine, law, engineering.
Leaving the crap ones being school teachers.

I'd rather watch maths online at home instead of going to a bludge maths class at school
My mate is on course to getting an ATAR >97 but he wants to be a teacher. However I am aware this is in the minority of situations.

I actually don't like teachers who cannot communicate effectively with their students... you might know all the stuff but if you can't teach it appropriately and have good relational skills then that's pretty much useless.

Just because you have a good ATAR doesnt necessarily mean that you will make a good teacher. I'm putting it out there, but I dont think intelligence necessarily makes someone a good teacher neither. With teaching, it really is quite a unique talent and some people have it and others dont - that quality is not dependent on intelligence or achievements in my view. At uni, I've been taught be a few lecturers who look amazing on paper but have been utterly useless in the classroom. By the same token, I remember having a teacher in HS who wasnt very intelligent, but he really had the touch and the content always seemed to sink in when he explained things.

Another factor is some people enter teaching because they had low ATARs and had no other option, while some with high ATARs choose to go into teaching rather than something else because they WANT to make a difference, because they want to improve our education system. I know this doesnt guarantee that they will have the 'teacher's touch', but passion and enthusiasm sure helps.

The thing is though, if you had gotten an ATAR of 90-99.95, would you rather become a teacher or go into a profession which has more money? It would just seem like a waste of potential, unless of course you really want to become a teacher. I think if someone has the passion and strives to get into something, and they will probably do well, society should let them do that, even if their record isn't top-notch.

Tbh the only solution i can see is making the atar cutoff higher, as is done in other countries

All because you're emotionally insensitive...
Guy 1: Rape me.
Guy 2: No homo, by the way

Even if you do say 'no homo', doesn't mean its not homo. Although as you can see, this situation is an extreme example.

What happens if you say to your mate:
"Your hair looks good. Nohomo."?

How do you EXPECT someone to aim high, do well and be inspired to achieve 99+ when ip the teacher teaching them can't even get an atar of 80...

Gosh, I feel like I'm about to start the toxic teacher debate again...:S

Btw, I'd rather watch maths online at home instead of going to a bludge maths class at school
yep
Some peeps that are smart do teaching
BUT
A lot of people aren't… great… :/

And like
A bunch of my teachers were happy with their mediocre scores
Which didn't really inspire anyone else to do well…
One of my geography/history teachers was like "woOah! I got 72 in my HSC!"
I laughed thinking he was joking and then he was like "that's actually pretty good when you think about it"
I just laughed more
He wasn't joking
Lol

So if I was like, "Bro, your hair is dam fine today". That would be straight and wouldn't require 'no homo' as you say?
Not sure if trolling or plain stupid. Anyways, get back on topic ie. school is a waste of time.

Lol, my business studies got an atar of 44.56. He was so open about it and he said he wasn't really upset with it. He is actually an alright teacher though

But some people like improve and do well after that and stuff
Which is good
Like you can be a good teacher with shit HS scores
But when you tell students that want to do really well, that 72 is really well
Then you're just in denial and giving students a false sense of achievement with mediocrity instead of pushing them to do better.

This is the shittiest logic in the world lol. First of all, you assume that the ATAR directly shows how smart you are, which, it doesn't. There are thousands of people who get low ATARs and are far more capable in every way than people who hole themselves away in their room for 12 months to get a 99. Realistically, almost anyone is CAPABLE of getting an 80+, its more so a matter of interest and motivation, which not everyone has (especially as a teenage for gods sake, sometimes we barely have the motivation to wake up before 12). Not only this, A LOT of people decide what they want to do before they start high school. If this is teaching, then they already have a predetermined ATAR aim which is out of their control. If you needed a 70 are you going to turn yourself into a hermit for the sake of showing how good you are? Probably not, more likely you're going to spend a majority of your HSC life socialising and relaxing.

Also I think its worth noting, my one of my teachers received an asterisk on his UAI, he is far more capable as a teacher than any other of my teachers, including my Adv English teacher who is an ex HSC marker. There's a lot to be said about people who get low ATARs due to lack of trying - a lot of them are far better off socially, being far more down to earth compared to their 'high achieving' counterparts who are generally pretty socially stunted (but not always of course) and it just shows me you may be one of those people when you cite a correlation between teaching ability and ATAR. Also have a teacher with a masters in history, and she's fucking hopeless.
