Just a heads up to anyone deciding to pursue a career in medicine.

All specialties (including GP because it is "general" specialty) have been oversubscribed by doctors who have completed their internship. 10-15% of doctors missed out on GP training.

This means medicine will only get more competitive from this year forward as the bottle neck right now is the specialty training positions.

This will mean don't expect to graduate and land a training position in your choice of specialty.

Jobs are already limited if you want to work in the city.

Have fun!

mate this has been an issue since 5 years ago, where have you been.

At least there's guaranteed internship for CSP students. Even some dentistry students are struggling to get a job now

i don't think this will last for too long from now too tbh

in about 5-10 years or so i think students will start missing out at least in the first year

Nah GP training positions were never oversubscribed in the past, everyone got a GP position if they applied in the past. I don't know why you talk as if you know so much about medicine when what you say has not been 100% accurate i.e. MD=MBBS, reading journals help improve interview etc.

Dentistry jobs are limited but in the long run it will turn out better than medicine because places haven't not increased for a long time but our population will continue to grow. Either way, I don't think I would be worried hunting for a dentistry job. It's all about attitude and portrayal.

Not 100% sure on this, but can PGY2 docs go on to do IM without taking a specialty?

Please..
'The number of students in dental programmes has risen by 330% since 2007. Since 2010 employment rate has dropped by 10%. The number of dentists entering the country annually through migration processes has also increased by 200%.'

http://www.ada.org.au/dentalprofessionals/default.aspx

So ironic how you told me that my data has been inaccurate where i actually read about this stuff and you just assume everything you say is right because you're doing med. Change that attitude son.

I was referring to NSW but Australia as a whole. If you do count Australia as a whole then yes dentistry places have significantly increased and some dentistry students are finding it hard to find a job but last year's batch of USYD BDS found jobs within 6 months. If you go rural it's no problem it's just an urban problem. This is also the same with medicine with a proportion of consultants coming from overseas.

I was referring to your quote of GP training places and not dentistry. I never said your data on dentistry was incorrect, please don't make incorrect accusations. I never implied I knew everything you're just inferring that when you make assumptions yourself.

PGY2 you're still under your initial contract so it wouldn't matter, you will need some rotations in IM. For PGY3 it is getting increasingly more difficult to find a job as a SRMO without specialising as a BPT. Even BPT's now are beginning to miss out on places due to the increased number of doctors. First choice specialties are even worse to get into. Again this is mainly an urban issue.

Dont question Medman he knows everything there is to know about medicine because he did a medical degree.

Birds of a feather flock together. No but I sure know more about it than those people who aren't even studying medicine and those who haven't yet spoken to junior and senior doctors about the future of medicine. Perhaps if you were about to graduate you'll care more about your future career.

I mean, I'm offering free advice here but I am thinking perhaps I should stop since everything I say seems to be met with ignorance much like trying to convince anti-vaccination groups on the benefits of vaccination.

Also flashygoldfish, if you aren't making a contribution why are you here?

you gotta invent more diseases so demand for docs increase, this will fix the chronic oversupply of doctors we have

You are the biggest pest/dropkick on BoS.
I don't think medman's being arrogant at all. It's not just because he's doing med, it's because he actually talks to those doing med and how they are going in terms of finding jobs etc.

Medman, I think it's moreso the way you communicate your ideas. Your ideas may be perfectly valid, but they will be often be met with resistance if there is even the slightest hint of superiority in it =)

Not trying to say that you walk around being all this and that of course! You know your stuff, but perhaps you could try presenting what you wish to say with a bit of a lower tone. You know, just to keep yourself looking humble and so your ideas are met with less resistance. Punching cornflour + water versus slowly dipping your hand in.

Anyway, apologies for the diversion, let's get this thread back on track =)

Fair point but if amirbang continues to attack me on a personal level then that makes it different. If you read his posts he instigates personal attacks. I try refute what he says but he just says I'm arrogant, good logic.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but something like this can't really be construed as "free advice" because essentially you have stated the fact that there's a problem and just rubbed it in everyone's faces ("have fun!") rather than offer constructive criticism about how to navigate poor job prospects (I know that in itself is a loaded question - but in this case the principle probably applies that if you've got nothing constructive to say, don't say anything). The fact is that most people going into medicine know about the difficult job market, which is something that exists across a lot of areas at the moment.

I did offer advice about navigating poor job prospects but people with amirbang refuse to listen until another med student actually agreed with my input (That an MD will actually increase your chances if you manage to publish). The crux of the problem is people who obstruct the flow of true information by giving misguided information. Also relating to my pm's how do you know I have not been giving advice to potential med hopefuls? In fact I've been giving a lot of advice to people who have private messaged me.

I'm providing information to potential medical students so they will consider medicine more seriously than picking it because they have the marks believing "job prospects" are good. If you think I'm rubbing it in everyone's faces, why would I bother to post it and answer people's questions? Your assumption that people "know" about the difficult job market is untrue, 0 of my 20 interview students knew about the difficulties in obtaining training positions in medicine. How much of the training pathway and difficulty do you know now as a medical student?

My initial information wasn't to address how to navigate medical specialties. Otherwise I would have said so in the topic. My initial intention was to let other's know even GP specialty is oversubscribed which has never happened ever in Australia. As medical students consider GP as a backup that is in jeopardy now as not everyone will be accepted. If you don't think it's helpful amirbang, it doesn't mean other's won't find it helpful.
