i know there are already a million threads regarding this but i am still confused, if i get an school assessment mark of 90 and examination mark of 80, will my HSC mark be 85?

Assessment mark is based on your rank, where if you are 4th, you will receive the 4th highest mark of your cohort. Since the assessment mark is half your final hsc mark, this is why ranks will affect half your hsc.

Depends on the performance of your cohort. For example, for average schools, you have top and bottom students. Due to this, the marks will spread a lot, particularly the middle. If you have average ranks your assessment mark ONLY, can either shift up or down, depending on the relative gaps between the students. Hence, if there are downies who your marks might be close to, you can possibly get your assessment mark dragged down and affect half your hsc mark, even though you smashed the external. Hence, if you help the downies and boost their marks, this would also boost your marks too.
