Currently ranked first across 2 and 3 unit maths. I have a band 6 average for both 2 and 3 unit, but apparently no matter how well you do in 3 unit, 4 unit is just impossibly difficult in comparison. I want to take it up, and if I do, I'll probably be the only student in the class, but I'm worried I can't take it on, and that if I do do it, it'll impact my performance on my other subject. Can anyone, if they have experience with the matter, tell me how much of your time 4 unit takes up, and roughly, how difficult it is in actual fact?

If you enjoy maths ALOT then I'd say go for it

EDIT: Depends on your other subjects though, since you're strong at maths extension, I'm sure taking up 4U will only mean more work, but you need to put effort into it.

The only thing you'll do differently in 4U is obviously harder maths, and less accentuation in small details such as graphs in 2U.

you haven't even started 4U!

OP, do it and you can always drop.

There's an entire HSC 4U topic devoted to Graphs.
Oh no, I'm not saying "NO MORE GRAPHS!" but just doing Preliminary, from my 2U exams and 3U exams, my teacher has pointed out that there will be less pressure of losing marks from small details on a graph. I don't know what 4U does, nor am I interested (since I'm not going to be doing it) but a lot of my teachers and tutor has informed me that if I do take up 4U, thats what it would be like.

1. Do you like maths?
2. Does your mathematics teacher think you are capable?

If yes to both these questions, then yes. Go for it!

You can always drop down...

This is definitely not true. My last test out of the 15 possible graph marks I lost 5 because of small details. There is more pressure of losing marks.

When I was doing 4u we were given a graph already drawn on a plane and we would have to draw the given manipulations.

If the new graph did not pass through at least 5 points specific points (Excluding x/y intercepts and point of intersection with the other graph) and did not got over or under the original graph between certain 1 cm intervals you would lose all marks.

If you are willing to put the time and energy in understanding 4u concepts as well as applying different methods of ways in solving questions, then go for it. On the first day of 4u, my teacher told the class that "Extension 2 is for people who are lazy in doing page-long working out for questions and instead, finding different methods of solution that will only take 1-2 lines". Basically you have to be committed to spending hours exploring different methods of solving questions. So far by experience, harder 4u questions tend to have 1 easily identifiable method that takes 1 page to do as well as a couple of easier methods, which are harder to identify and only takes a couple of lines.

So the real question is, are you willing to sacrifice your time and energy to studying 4u maths?

That shouldn't really be a surprise, I've been marked down because when I sketched the squareroot of a particular graph, between 0<x<1, apparently I didn't make the curve go out enough, so I lost like 2 marks, despite the general shape being correct.

Do it, if you think you might like it. I thought it would be insanely hard, but it's not as hard as it may seem. If you don't like it you can always drop it

With the ranks and marks you have said you have achieved in 3u and 2u, i can clearly tell you are exceptionally gifted at maths and you should be able to do 4u. 4u is not impossibly difficult as the rumours suggest, however you do have to have a real passion for maths and be willing to put some time and effort into it. Remember, you can drop subjects but you can't pick them up so make sure you don't regret your decision in the future

Oh god really? I just heard that Extension 2 was less of those visuals and graphs. I'm so wrong LOL! Sorry!
