Hey, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, or if I've missed anything else; I'm sort of new here.

I'm actually a foreign international school student from Malaysia, looking to move to Australia for my university studies. For reasons of my own, mostly to do with branding, I wish to study, and go into, Film (Undecided in screen writing or directing yet), but I don't wish to go to film school, only a university with that course.

Do you all have any sort of recommendation for where I might find such a university and/or course? Be glad to hear it, and your experience with it.

Thanks in advance.

In an Arts degree, you can major in Film Studies, which is offered at a large majority of Universities in Australia e.g. UNSW and USyd.

I'm not quite sure how much this is related to actual work as a director/screenwriter.

I'm actually in your position regarding picking a second course for film, but I'm unsure of what to pick.

Right, right, I hear what you're saying TonySoprano. UNSW Does indeed hold, quite literally, my perfect course, Media (Screen and Sound Production).

Do you know of any other universities that hold similar courses nearby Perth and/or Melbourne?

I know you specifically said you weren't interested in going to a film school but I strongly think you should reconsider. As far as I am aware, production companies actually prefer it if you majored at a film school as it is a more hands on, practical approach. Is there any reason why you would rather go to a university?

For a very simple reason: When going to a film school, said school can and will brand your films with their name. At the very beginning, any film made there will be made by "Insert film school name here presents", followed by your name. Very easy to get upstaged, and hard to get my name out.

also its hella expensive to go to actual film school. even though AFTRS is the 20th top filmschool in the world!

im not sure whether this is right, but i do think that even universities will put their name on it and keep it for their purposes as well, i dont think there's a way round it tbh

Well, my way around it would be the aforementioned creative arts/media degree. Do you think it would make that much of a difference in terms of production though? Genuinely, I have no idea how much more/less effective it would be if I had film school graduation and the films already made under my belt, or the same films made and a creative arts degree.

At film school, your goal is not to make quality films that get your name out there, it's to give you the necessary skills to make the quality films in the first place. I'm almost certain that the quality of film education will be far higher at a dedicated film school then at a university.

This is a much better question. How serious are you about working in film? If you're not 100% deadset on it, it's not a bad idea to go to a university and get that communications degree, which can get you into anything media related, whether that be in PR or in film. But if film is your passion, then go for film school.

You are now officially a wizard for giving me pretty much everything I need from this thread. Have an internet cookie.

Seriously though, that pretty much focuses my uni search. Thanks a lot! ^^
