Hi all,
This is my first year of uni.
i will be starting a Bachelor of Medical Science at USYD and don't know what to get before uni starts. i don't want to get behind waiting for books and equipment. I've read the handbook and there are suggested textbooks, and for math some of the books have been written specifically for the course. Should i purchase these books before uni starts so I'm ready, or will the lecturer tell me what i need, during the first few classes?
Don't want to waste my money as textbooks are expensive! Thanks :)

Definitely get all of the maths books/course notes. Most of them won't be available until when semester starts anyway, so you'll have to pick them up from Kopystop on Mountain Street at the start of term.

For your other science subjects I'd wait until you hear from the lecturer.

How much do the maths course notes cost? And how comprehensive are they? Would one be at a disadvantage if they only studied from the course notes rather than purchasing the textbook for a mathematics course? Thanks hahah. I'm pretty cheap.

They're about $30 each I think?? I'm not too sure, you can also buy second hand ones for much cheaper.

Yeah they're around the $30 mark, so not too expensive.

The only mathematics course at USYD with a textbook is MATH1002/1902, and there are no course notes available for that subject.

Technically you could do without them but they are quite organised notes and sometimes have extra questions; I actually prefer them to the notes written in lectures. The Linear Algebra (MATH1002/1902) book in particular has quite a number of practice exercises that should supplement your tutorial questions quite nicely.

I have a very old copy of the MATH1002/1902 (combined) notes from over 10 years ago :p
