Hello, is EAL/D more better course than advanced for people who are eligible, I have heard advanced is the better choice.

English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) is a subject designed for students whose first language is a language or dialect other than English and who require additional support to assist them to develop proficiency in English. The English EAL/D course may be studied by any student who has been educated overseas or in an Australian educational institution with English as the language of instruction for five years or less prior to commencing the Preliminary (Year 11) course. On the other hand, English Advanced (similar to other levels of HSC English) assumes students are either native speakers of English or, if non-native, that they have/demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the English language that would enable them to successfully undertake and complete this subject. English Advanced is therefore not designed for students that fit the primary category of EAL/D, so it is reasonable to describe that English Advanced as a more difficult subject.

One of the main differences between EAL/D and the other levels of English with respect to the HSC exam is the Listening Paper. The HSC exam for EAL/D entails an assessable listening component as opposed to English Advanced.

As far as I know, both subjects align relatively well, especially when compared to English Standard. However, it is important to note that your own circumstances (including fluency and proficiency) as well as performance potential should be prioritised over this factor. How would you rate your current performance in English? Do you feel your performance is at a standard that would allow you to successfully complete the English Advanced course? Do you perhaps feel that taking a slightly easier subject such as EAL/D with good alignment would be the better option, provided you fulfill the eligibility criteria?

do EAL/D, there's not much difference between the courses except you'll do listening tests and stuff in that category, its still as difficult (coming from my head teacher). I've seen a lot of people who did EAL/D do extremely well in their other subjects so don't consider it a low scaling subject.

Fair enough. In my case, I was aware of what EAL/D was. However, I wasn't able to pick it due to a clash with another subject.

Yes, you can definitely achieve a 99.95 ATAR with EAL/D. In fact, you can achieve a 99.95 ATAR with any subject combination, as long as you perform at a sufficiently high standard in each of your subjects.

The possibility of achieving a 99.95 ATAR can be confirmed thanks to UAC's reports on the scaling of each year's HSC cohort, which are published each year. These reports contain information including the maximum ATAR achieved by a student who took a specific subject for that year's HSC. This means that you could also view maximum ATAR information for other subjects in addition to EAL/D. In terms of EAL/D, the maximum ATAR achieved with this subject was 99.95 in both 2022 and 2023.

You can still achieve a 99.95 even with such a subject combination. It just means that you will most likely need to achieve the highest possible marks in most of your subjects to maximise your chances.
