Have I completely missed out on rural medicine pathways if I've missed the UCAT ? I'm eligible for WSU as well as UNSW rural pathways, and I think I would get a decent atar of 90-95. However, I haven't thought about what I've wanted to do after school so I never did much research into medicine unfortunately. Is there any way I could still apply this year ? Or alternatively, is there a way I could apply next year while in another undegrad course while keeping my rural status ?

u could take a gap year or do another course (if u dont get the atar), do ucat, and if u pass apply for medicine
So I can do another course, then reapply next year with UCAT ?

yes, you can do any other course and reapply with ucat, but usually people do something health related so they at least learn something that is kinda relevant. i.e. medical science, etc

so im pretty sure u can do any course but u have to get like really good and transfer
Ahh okay, cheers, I checked UNSW and it says 91 ATAR + a WAM of 70 is what you need to go into rural pathway after one year of uni. Not sure how that would work if I move out of a rural area to do my degree though.

the rural application only takes into account your atar, and so if you did your hsc that was considered a rural area, it will still count. (correct me if im wrong otherwise its kinda unfair ngl)

You are definitely right. Apparently I qualify if I lived in a rural area for 5-10 years between ages 5-18, so i guess if i did a year in sydney between 18-19 it would not matter.

My understanding is most unis just add on your rurality as an extra factor when ranking applicants (ucat + atar + interview + "rural score"), so its not so much a separate pathway as just a bonus. So yeah you'll need ucat for undergraduate entry unless you do somethign like aboriginal pathway. One thing I believe you can do is get as high ATAR as possible, take gap year/start uni course, do your UCAT in 2024 and apply for undergraduate then.

I'm guessing your rural ? How do you feel about placement in wagga wagga/port macquarie for studying med with UNSW, have you heard anything bad/good about people's experiences?

Yeah I'm rural. Haven't heard anything about it tbh, but I assume it would be good considering its through UNSW. Also I don't live too far from Wagga so wouldn't mind going there for a bit but thats besides the point lmao

I mean like, if you go through rural pathway, you usually have to attend wagga wagga and port macquarie campuses for your whole degree. Surely it could get a bit boring living in wagga wagga for 6 years.
