Don't work for centres that require you to get an ABN

The pay is nowhere close to pay for private tutoring from my research, tbh idt it's worth it you're better off getting a job in retail or sports

(and like 3 hours a week... so basically they use a casual rate or whatever even tho you are barely working when if you get part-time retail or something you will be much better off... and can add 3 hours extra at say 60/hr for private tutoring)

why? im gonna be in first year uni and its the only Job Offer I have right now with good pay
general argument is you get hired as a contractor rather than a casual/part time staff member, meaning that you lose a lot of the privileges and benefits associated with being an actual member of the business rather than a contractor. these benefits generally include things like superannuation, having to do your own taxes, workers compensation eligibility, etc... (basically a lot of the NES)

that said, art of smart offers a lot of the benefits to contractors still. i believe they pay ~10.5% super to your account, do your taxes(?) (this is a bit less of a worry though since you're probably not going to break the tax free threshold part time), and maybe some other stuff.

tldr you have no rights

Art of Smart is complete rubbish for so many reasons:

1. It adds bureaucratic rubbish to tutoring - they want you to use scripts when calling parents and manage an online timetable and all this other rubbish
2. You get paid half as much as you would if you tutored on your own despite charging 2-3x what they pay you to the student
3. The resources they give you are shoddy, you're better off using a textbook
4. They are rubbish at finding you students; it took them 5 months for them to find me a student (Which would only be for 1.5 hrs a week) and they gave me someone outside of the areas I said I could work - it would have been a 40 minute drive?? The petrol would cost more than I'd make. In the same time period I found 5 students on gumtree and highschooltutors.com
5. Far less flexibility than if you are private tutoring and can just reschedule with parents
6. If they somehow find you enough students to make a real amount of money, you're going to have to declare and pay tax on your income since its not cash in hand like it would be if you did private

Do not be exploited by these remote tutoring agencies. Either work at a centre where there are set 3hr+ shifts or private tutor.
