Hello everyone. I’m starting school in a couple of days and I’m quiet worried about being able to stay on top of everything, I did quiet well in year 10 and junior years, topping my year group without any studying in general, except last day revisions of the content) so I’m not sure of how to study my subjects, how much to study, and what order to do everything, it’s all very confusing. I was planning to do it these holidays but I kinda procrastinated using not knowing what to do as an excuse, I borrowed atar notes books from my library for all my subjects but haven’t studied them yet. I’m doing Math Advanced, Math Extension, English Advanced, Chemistry, Economics, PDHPE and either biology or physics (I picked bio, since I wanna do medicine but after hearing advice on m considering switching to physics need advice with that too). Is it too late for me already and if not how can I save myself at this point I feel like I’ve already messed up a bit. (btw if anyone knows the order the modules in St Mary’s senior high are studied, that would be very helpful too!!) (Sorry for the yap I’m just worried)

studying based off the syllabus was my savior, they literally hand it to you on a silver platter on the nesa website in dot points its awesome.

personally i procrastinated alot and left my revision for trials and hsc to basically the last day (which i DO NOT recommend especially if you're heading into medicine) and would end up using notes from acehsc (you can find notes on boredofstudies too) and just used osmosis to sink the knowledge into my head.

you're only starting year 11, so take your time gradually increasing your study based on what you learn in class! cause most of this stuff should be new content for you. you could jump the bullet and do more research ahead of time but i've never known anyone who does that lol, but whatever floats your boat!

and please, don't forget to enjoy your senior years! try not to drown yourself in too much study. :)

You don't need bio for med, unis in NSW don't have any subject prerequisites, and besides HSC bio isn't that useful for med, from what I've heard. Pick whichever one you're better at.

My advice on year 11 is to get a notebook (loose leaf recommended) and take notes especially in STEM subjects. I found this is mostly useful for cementing info into my brain, rather than looking back at. Also don't wait till the week before the exam to read your text for english (trust me). And also yeah, don't take it too hard, like ik you're going for med and everything but just don't overload yourself otherwise yr 12 will be SO PAINFUL

Tbh I have no idea if I'm better at bio or physics but from what I've heard bio scaling was pretty bad last year so I'm thinking I might as well just go physics

best piece of advice i can give you as someone who also did amazing throughout y7-10 with little to no study is to develop good study habits and techniques in year 11 so you are better off for year 12. these are things like:
  • staying on top of regular homework/assignments: when you know you are going to get hw for something every single time you have a class (e.g. small assignments, finishing off notes/work from class, weekly tutoring hw) you should straight away plan a certain time in the week to do it. if it is a daily thing try to do today's work today so if you get work again tmr you dont have to do extra.
  • if you are procratinating and are putting off something you are meant to be working on, just sit down and do just 5 min of that specific thing and stop. you will find that once you get started even for 5 min, you will feel fine to keep going and not need to stop. and if you do need to stop do the 5 min thing again and go from there.
  • don't cram for exams. it doesnt matter if you can manage to cram and still do well, the fact is that it is the worst way to study and ultimately when you get to uni (bc you say you want to do med specifically) you will not be able to get away with cramming all the time and the worst part is if you do it once you will get used to it and do it again.
  • revise regularly. even if you dont have exams coming up, have a weekly revision schedule where you just go over everything you did that week in class (do anything except just reading over your work, try making flashcards or mindmaps or do some extra questions - it doesnt have to be a lot but just something small for each subject - maybe like 10 to 20 min) because it will remind you that you did do that thing and you wont completely forget it and have to relearn it before an exam.
  • start revising for exam blocks at least 2 weeks before an exam, and by the time there is only 1 week to the exam you should have finsihed all notes and flashcards and what not and starting to use active revision techniques like practise papers or questions (timed and untimed) in order to simulate the exam conditions.
  • seek teacher feedback for when you write long and short responses - especially subjects like pdhpe, eco and english. this will help you improve your answers and will help
  • anything else your teachers suggest that helps you
the reason why i haven't given you any subject-relatd advice is if you do these things regularly and seek help when you need it, you should be fine regardless of what subjects you do because the most important thing is that you're studying stuff and you're studying it in the most effective way.

if you want to know what to study for school exams (not hsc exams), the best advice you can get is from your own school teachers because every school's exams are vastly different and nobody can specifically tell you what to focus on to do well apart from your own teachers because they are in charge of your school's content and exams.

other random advice:
  • TAKE BREAKS AND RELAX - this is so important because if you burn out you wont be able to stuy properly and year 11 is not really that serious so you don't need to burn yourself out just then. its okay to spend maybe a few hours a week relaxing and a few hours doing extracurriculars because you need to relax and do stuff other than studying to be a well rounded person
  • its okay to make mistakes and mess up - everyone messes up even in year 12 and the hsc. don't give up and keep going bc esp if you mess up in y11 it doesnt count and its not a reflection of how you will do in year 12.
