i come from a small school with around 50 in my grade... my physics class has 5 students and I'm probably ranked 4th or 5th. i know your ranking and position in your cohort matters heaps for hsc, but because it's a small class, would being last/lower rankings negatively affect my atar a lot?

thanks guys!

it can affect you very negatively, for history extension i got 47/50 for hsc, but my internal ranking was 3/5 and the 3rd person got 39/50 so i got brought down to 43. try to go up by ranks, or make sure you and everyone in your class does well.

agree with bcv its entirely dependent on your cohort. If everyone does well then you wont be impacted badly, my 95 in legal only became a 94. Sometimes weird things can happen though, I was ranked third in Modern History and the only person to get a band 6 because 4th and 5th did better than 1st and 2nd (1st and 2nd dragged 4th and 5th down) so really you just want everyone to do as well as they can! you cant guarantee anything will happen, dont stress too much

You just get the 4th or 5th lowest mark in the HSC exam from the people doing that subject

If you're doing the Asian 5 with giga scaling or if you're in a good school you're chilling. But otherwise you wanna have a good internal rank.

I remember I was Rank 1 in English and remember scuffing that exam in the HSC but i still got a high Band 5 because of my internal rank.

That being said, one of the old mods on BoS (like 2013 cohort) got a scuffed ATAR and studied at a non go8 in first year uni then transferred into a 98 ATAR law course in 2nd year because got HDs. So no reason to stress too much unless you want to do med or something.
