"Student challenges ruling on her HSC"

What a way to game the system. This woman should be slapped across the face or something! Seriously, never going to wherever she practices.

    variations in gravitational field

hah, lovely brainbend we have there.

    variations in gravitational field

Yep, that makes sense. :) I doubt the syllabus wants us to go into THAT much detail, but meh. Better to understand it the right way.

    Rocket Calculation Question

Alright. a) "minimum thrust" means that the rocket's acceleration MUST be at least 9.8ms^-2, so that it can overcome the downward acceleration due to gravity. So as, a = T - mg/m, rearrange for T (this would be T = ma + mg) but as a = g (ignoring the negative), T= 2mg. Use that to...

    variations in gravitational field

True that. I forgot. People mistake "centrifugal force" as inertia. That's what I did in my definition. Sorry. EDIT: I guess you COULD say that the inertia of the person/object as it spins on the Earth's surface is to blame for this net g-value. It's a guess, but that could substitute for the...

    variations in gravitational field

okay. First of all, acceleration due to gravity on earth varies slightly as a result of several factors. One of the factors is the distance of the body from the centre of the Mass. The earth isn't perfectly spherical, so therefore, the distance from the centre isn't a constant value. The...

    Uhh... algebra...

Both questions require this relationship: (a + b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab +b^2 figure out how to manipulate each one into this form, and work from there....

    mechanics

Although I haven't started Mechanics yet, I would think that having a bit of Physics knowledge helps you understand what is happening in the given situation. Because really, if you don't understand that, it's a lot harder to approach the given question.

Thoughts on Terry Lee Ext 1 Textbook

I've heard that he copies a lot of his questions from other books. Is that true?

    Maths in focus

the questions aren't THAT bad (unless you are referring to the Extension section. Those are HARD). :S But more to the point. Like most people have mentioned already, MIF is way too simple. I have never used it, although a lot of my friends have. They all say the same thing. Their teachers even...

Trouble with Locus questions in Conics

Yeah, here is one: The point P(acos(theta), bsin(theta)) is any point on the ellipse x^2/a^2 + y^2/b^2 = 1 with focus S. The point M is the midpoint of interval SP. Show that as P moves along the ellipse, M lies on another ellipse whose centre is midway between the origin O and the focus S...

Trouble with Locus questions in Conics

If that is the case, why is it part of questions in many 4Unit textbooks?

Trouble with Locus questions in Conics

Hey guys! I have been having serious trouble with certain types of Conics questions, especially those that involve finding the locus of a point (especially those involving sine and cosine functions). Is there a good tip/trick to solving those types of problems?

    phoenix practice questions by topic?

and to think I actually bought the book, then only to see this.....

    MCQ question help.

Yeah, D looks right. A and B help because air acts as an excellent insulator for friction heat. C is pretty much critical, but D isn't really important in reducing the HEAT effect. It's more useful for reducing G-forces.

    Best/Most Useful Textbook

At school, we use Cambridge 3U. It is, by far, THE BEST book for understanding the concepts, and in each exercise, the questions have an increasing curve of difficulty, which I find, is excellent for grasping them. One thing though that annoys me about it is the way the topics are organised...
