If you want to talk about the “true” number infected then both the US and Italy (to a lesser extent) are very under-reported as well. The US testing regime was a mess early on and only recently has picked up. Italy has only been testing when more severe symptoms arise so they’re missing a lot of...

    COVID-19 and school closures

You would think that most schools have done about one or two assessment tasks by now? So perhaps it would be based on these in a worst case scenario. Given the government is predicting to hold onto these restrictions for around 6 months, I reckon the most likely outcome is that it would be safe...

Australia apparently has one of the largest number of tests particularly on a per capita basis, only behind countries like South Korea. https://ourworldindata.org/covid-testing

Parents can still choose to keep their children home though at their own discretion. But parents who still want to send their kids to school have that option available to them.

Had a look at the infection data for a few countries. The bad news is that it looks like the rate of infection in the US has overtaken that of Iran and Italy in a similar period. Australia seems to be doing alright so far and hopefully that rate is slowed once the impact of the restrictions kick...

The rate of increase in Australia seems to be remaining pretty constant. Around every four days the number doubles. Whilst it’s not great it’s actually better than a lot of other countries at the moment, includng the big European countries, the UK and the US.

    COVID-19 and school closures

Nah, the threads have been merged. Also FYI we shouldn’t be surprised at the skyrocketing numbers because this is how exponential growth works (you’ll learn this in HSC Maths Adv). Suppose that one person infects two people at a time before they are isolated. If those two people then go onto...

    COVID-19 and school closures

Panicking actually makes the situation worse because it makes people act selfishly and irrationally. The most obvious example of this playing out is in the panic buying. If people didn’t panic buy everyone would be able to get supplies no worries. But now that people are panic buying, society as...

    COVID-19 and school closures

The website BLIT linked says “our schools are operating as usual” on their Thursday update. Further updates since that suggest only a handful of schools are closing at their own discretion, which seems consistent with what most news outlets are reporting. If your claim that most Catholic...

    COVID-19 and school closures

That’s the thing though. Statistically, school aged children do not seem to experience many adverse effects from the virus compared to adults. The issue with closing schools means students instead spend their time out in the community (especially if they’re unsupervised) infecting others who...
