Wait until after your first lectures before buying any textbooks/readers. You'll find that many of the books on text lists you won't need. Each of your lecturers will tell you exactly what is required. However you'll eventually find a text list for many subjects here...

Hardly ever needed to bring a textbook. On the odd occasion i've carried my 2,500 page book around in my hand. Didn't see the point of using a bag just to carry that.
