The Official 2006 FIFA World Cup thread.

14m for Carrick a bargain? Maybe for Chelski yes, but not for any other team out there. Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool probably don't have 10 players between them who would realistically fetch 14m pds. Rooney, Ronaldo, Ruud and Ferdinand. Henry, Fabregas and Cole Gerrard and Alonso

He's good but I don't want him for 14m pds...I'll leave the rest for the footy thread

One of the best value bets of the cup is C Ronaldo to be Portugal's top-scorer at $6.50 with betandwin.com. He averages a goal every 2 games for Portugal I think. Meanwhile, I won't be watching tonight's games. Anatomy theory 3 hr exam at 9:00 tomorrow morning! Evil! Ah well, lucky they...

The best part about their new stadium is how all the Arse fans gave it to us Utd fans about 'selling out' when Glazer bought us (nothing we could do about it though). Well who's the team who sold out with their stadium name? lol

The smart money is on Ronaldo for the golden boot politik. I've got $3 on him at $11 (as well as $1 each on RVN at $19 and Torres at $34). :)

He has always played better for Portugal than for Man Utd (at least on a more consistent basis). I think this is because he is much better suited to playing 'in the hole' as part of Portugal's 4-2-3-1. I think it looks like this (excluding the defence): -------Maniche---Costinha...

Exactly. And you could throw his shooting into the mix but it too is improving. You could probably argue that Ronaldo as an all-round player is better than Ronaldinho was at 21, so we will see how well he fulfils his massive potential.

No worries mate. That and youtube are pretty good as far as compilations go. Seeing as I don't watch a lot of Liga, I never realised how often Ronaldinho turns on the party tricks. With the ball in the air, he is awesome! He never seems to do too many tricks in the CL nor in a big game (usually...

matt- go to www.football-video.com and join (quick and simple). You can download the 3 R's video - Ronaldo, Rooney and Ruud. Pretty good. Leans towards Ruud more but brings back some great memories of him. Also, there's a Ronaldo v Ronaldinho video too. Awesome. I have them burnt to a DVD!

Who plays alongside Reo-coker in CM now? Benayoun? Not sure it's a massive improvement, plus you get the added baggage. I'd stay away from Bowyer if I was West Ham.

Unfortunately I don't think we can rely on 2OleLegend any more as a starter. He is someone we can call on from the bench occasionally, but I think it would take a bit of an injury crisis for him to start (we have Rooney, Ruud, Saha, Rossi and Smith). Benny - good to see another fan of The...

You're kidding right? If we buy Ribery maybe things will change, but as long as Ronaldo plays right wing, we need a good crosser of the ball at right back who can overlap Ronaldo. Another thing - I think that during our run of wins towards the end of the season our frontline was a fluid...

Brown is definitely better than Silvestre. With Silvestre, you are guaranteed a reasonably bad mistake per match. Brown is a good foil for Rio, very much in the John Terry mould (but not as good). Rio's pace and passing with Brown's 'natural defender' attributes, like tackling and reading the...

Matt - I too think we will end up with Diarra and Ribery (for a combined total of about 30m pds). Then we can sell Silvestre, and there are rumours we will sell Spector (maybe 2-3m pds?). Fortune is gone already, we announced a few months ago that we were letting him go as his contract expires...

otay - Who would replace him? It's not just about results at Man Utd. When we played 4-3-3 it was booed. The next manager must be up to the job but at the same time it is essential that exciting football is played. I don't mean to sound arrogant but that's the way Utd have always been. At...

Matt, who do you think we'll sell and sign in the transfer window? I'm wondering if we are holding off with Diarra so that we don't seem desperate and end up buying him for a little less after the WC.

otay - HAHAHA love it. The goalkeeping 'debate' should be somehting we are absolutely sure of by now. Anyone who thinks Kalac still deserves his chance knows nothing about football. He's a good #2, but Schwarzer is proven for us (against Uruguay and the Dutch) and plays a lot more regularly...

Benny is definitely right about Cahill being better than Nakata in their present states. Nakata is not a regular starter for Bolton, whereas Cahill was one of Everton's best last season when they finished 4th, and was again one of their best this year even if he didn't score as often.
