I highly recommend you stay away from that topic....Its as someone said long, hard and the amount of memorising you have to do is not worth it. Just do something that everyone does such as Shipwreck or industrial.

Really depend when your teacher want to finish....Some schools finish before the trial while some school finish like before term 3 finishes.... I prefer if they finish before the trial, which is what we are aiming to go... We are 2/3 through our third topic "The search for better Health"...

Excel by itself is okay if you are looking for a Band 4 , anything above it is not alright. I mean the book is only 200 pages covering like 7 topics, So there is a bit of a problem. My choice, go find another book, Jacaranda obviously the best, but Longman is hopeless

You don't do any individual practicals....but I think it is wise to fudge the pracs so as if you done something...so when they ask you in the exams....which they may do (1 in 3 chance in the modules) you need to be prepared to answer one.
