    Semester 1 Chatter Thread (2009)

Today's goals are to re-learn all the calculation problems for Project Management, and make notes for those sections to study from.

    Chinalco-Rio deal scrapped

If the shareholders are accepting a lump sum offer from the Chinese over future dividend profits then that indicates that lump sum is preferred by Australians over those dividends, so Australia is losing out by not making such a sale. You're the one who's made the statement, you give us a...

Who calculates the WAM and how can I get in touch with them?

It's a weighted average of your marks. You also have no marks, as you started this year. Calculate it yourself when you get some marks. Neg repped for silly question.

    Free Markets and Meritocracy

Whether indigenous communities would exist in such backwaters without the government pumping fucktonnes of welfare into them is debatable. A lot of problems associated with 'environmental disadvantage' and parental abuse could be solved if we were willing to take on a few of the sacred cows (and...

    The Chaser's War on Everything

If you refer to them as 'the chasers' you should off yourself now. Enjoyed parts of last night's show. Fritzl skit in particular was amazing.

    Free Markets and Meritocracy

The private/public school divide isn't really of consequence as the latter end up outperforming the former at university anyway, so we're fairly clearly discussing this within a framework with a well formed public education system. Over and above this I've already stated that inheritence is a...

    Free Markets and Meritocracy

Do we really measure a life by its achievements at age 22? If I had less talent I'd probably be an electrician by now making far more than I am as a student, I'd like to think of my early 20s as a transitory phase.

    Free Markets and Meritocracy

Not at all. You can't measure how much 'luck' somebody has been granted in their lifetime, only the number of opportunities they've been clever enough to seize. The vast, vast bulk of people are where they are because of their talent and hard work or lack thereof. Inheritence taxes are another...

    Free Markets and Meritocracy

This is just utter tosh. Ansett died because Air New Zealand mismanaged them terribly and Qantas' economy of scale (along with other loss-making start ups) drove them out of the market. If you're bad at your job and you're in the public eye, you get sacked. Sometimes you go to gaol. But you...

    Where does one purchase ties?

I'd argue that any job where you're required to wear a tie would know the difference, and the price difference is in my experience $25-30ish for polyester or $40-50 for silk, so there's no real reason to go the former.

    Where does one purchase ties?

If you want a good tie you'll be spending at least $50 on it. Myer CBD has some $150 ones marked down to $50 at the moment because they're last season's stock.

    some engineering questions

Electrical gets fucked up in second year. I got 96/93 for 3u/4u respectively and failed a couple of elec subjects dismally. Then again that's not my passion cause I'm a software kid so eh.
