    conflicting solutions to this q

    I would just like to point out that u2 = 1 - x is not a clear-cut definition of the value of u. That particular solution suggests that (u2)1/2 = u, when in actuality, (u2)1/2 = |u|. Hence, there are 2 cases: If u > 0, |u| = u, and (u2)1/2 = u. If u < 0, |u| = -u, and (u2)1/2 = -u.

    Textbook Maths in Focus

Honestly, I think we should boycott that lady that wrote MIF. I would be embarassed to be the person who wrote that book.

    Integration Question

    Just for kick's sake, no need for a substitution: \\ \int \frac{x - 2}{\sqrt{x + 2}} dx = \\ \int \frac{(x + 2) - 4}{\sqrt{x + 2}}dx = \\ \int (\sqrt{x + 2} - \frac{4}{\sqrt{x + 2}}) dx = \\ \frac{2(x+2)^{3/2}}{3} - 8\sqrt{x+2} + C I don't think this is true. I did it all the time.

inequalities with x in the denominator

The case method is quite useful...but I doubt most teachers would understand it :p

    Quick Graph Question

In my opinion, best way is to decide on the domain and range, then find turning points and intercepts.

    Non-accelerated students?

I did the year 11 3U course, didn't bother with the year 12 2U course. And I was finished year 12 3U by the end of 2008 in terms of course content...so I don't really remember how much I worked for year 11. Neglected physics...but I'm quite good at English (finished HSC chemistry). Doesn't...

    Non-accelerated students?

For my first assessment (graphs, complex numbers and polynomials), I hadn't completely finished the course yet so I did textbook exercises which I hadn't done before. By the end of term 1, I was pretty much finished the course (with some minor deficiencies like non-uniform circular motion and...

    Non-accelerated students?

Isn't that completely off-topic :p It was alot of work, perhaps not as much effort. On average I completed about 5 chapters each of Fitzpatrick, Cambridge and Terry...and did 100 trial papers and the past 15 years of HSC papers. Studied around 4 hours of maths a day when I didn't go to school...

    Non-accelerated students?

And second in 4U. So basically it isn't essential to do the 2/3U in the previous year.

    Non-accelerated students?

Yes, I accelerated...didn't do 2/3 U the year before though.

    Graphing

    You can draw 3 + x^0.5, then to get x(3 + x^0.5): add an x-intercept at x = 0.

to get a 99 ATAR is it true that you need a band 6 in 10units?

    For 2009, ATAR of 99.8: Maths Extension 1 = 100 Maths Extension 2 = 97 Chemistry = 94 Physics = 96 English = 89

Got 96 in 2U HSC. Give up for 4U?!

What I'm saying is that he's already done 3 units of mathematics...so doing the 4 unit course will only add an extra unit.

Got 96 in 2U HSC. Give up for 4U?!

Well I know that many people will disagree with me but...doing Extension 2 Mathematics means you only get an extra unit towards your HSC (despite the awesome aligning and scaling) but so much effort goes into it...it's like a whole other subject. I'd say stick with your other subjects, no need...
