You get a micro SD, plug that into your usb drive, download some roms onto it, plug the micro SD into the R4, then put the R4 into the slot-1 of the DS. It's VERY easy and straight forward.
I only update mine when I try to run a rom and it doesnt work. The last time I updated it was with that final fantasy revanant game, and it turned out all you needed was an action-replay or whatever code to disable the copy-protection.
