I would agree with you that, under Bush, America was very far off utilitarianism, but I think Obama's going to be the closest they get. I would also argue that democracy as an ideal is the epitome of utilitarianism in that it is concerned with the greatest good for the greatest number of people...

These are exactly the reasons I don't think it should be used. I mean, it's not that hard for people not to use it, and a small price to pay if it makes life just a little easier for someone.
