Aboriginal Australian Olympian defies rules & wears Aboriginal flag

I didn't think I would have to point it out, but Aboriginals are not indigenous to Australia either. They may have came here some 40000 years ago, although, no, they are not indigenous to the land.

Aboriginal Australian Olympian defies rules & wears Aboriginal flag

It is a perfect example. Should someone who was born in India to Indian parents, yet is now an Australian citizen and is representing Australia at the London 2012 games be allowed to wear a t-shirt during Olympic competition that is recognising his culture by displaying the Indian flag on it? No.

Yes. It should be enough of an honour for Ricki-lee Coulter or some other singer to sing the national anthem at an event.

Aboriginal Australian Olympian defies rules & wears Aboriginal flag

So? Many of our Olympians competing for Australia were not born in Australia. Do you think they should wear t-shirts of their former country (before they became an Aus. citizen)? If they tried it they would probably be removed from the team and sent back home to Australia immediately.

An Aboriginal elder lights two sticks together and from what I gather, cleanses away the bad spirits etc.

I am happy to show respect, although not pay for it. If the Aboriginal people feel they need a smoking ceremony (another question/debate in itself) then they should do it for free when invited to do so at events.

    Asylum seeker debacle

There is. Although I would question why you feel he has a need to "preserve his culture" - why has he not became part of Australian culture (while still retaining some of his own)? This is what I have a problem with. If you can't speak English, don't move to Australia. I can't speak Mandarin...

    The Official 2012 Olympics Thread

Governments over the past few years have cut Australia's sporting budgets. Australia doesn't have the money to spend (or waste, depending upon how you look at it) like China does.

    Asylum seeker debacle

Here here. A lot of Australians hold simialr values although it is not exactly politically correct to express them (although it is something that as a nation we need to address). It is nothing about skin colour, it is all about culture. This was good immigration. The Greeks (for example)...

    Asylum seeker debacle

I concur. I have no problem with the genuine refugees and Australia meeting its commitments under the Refugee Convention. However these 'boat people' as they are commonly referred too are not genuine refugees, they are economic refugees who simply want to skip the (legal) immigration ques and...
