    Probability using binomial identities

Last year's question was brilliant. From memory, the Schaum's book on and combinatorics has a lot of interesting questions. I remember one that went something like: 6 women and 5 men sit randomly around a table. What is the probability that none of the men will be sitting next to each...

    Binomial theorem and polynomials HELP

Yes to Cambridge. Bill Pender is the Godfather (in my opinion at least) of HSC mathematics and these textbooks are simply brilliant. They ideally prepare students for Extension 2 (the Ext 2 cambridge book is by different authors and is a rehash of the old Arnold and Arnold book which while OK is...

    Binomial theorem and polynomials HELP

Have you done calculus yet - I'm guessing not but heh. If not, a lot of the harder HSC stuff is going to be a little beyond you. What I would suggest you doing is doing as much as you can of past papers - including past papers at your school (hassle your teacher for as many as you can get your...

    Binomial theorem and polynomials HELP

What textbook do you use? Cambridge has an excellent treatment on both polynomials and the binomial theorem. Past HSC questions are most likely what you are looking for though. As they are generally Q6 or Q7, they tend to be harder and more difficult to understand than typical textbook...

    Binomial theorem query

You want the indices to balance out, ie r = 2n therefore the term is 3nC2n. This is the same as 3nCn (just with the indices swapped around). r = n or r = 2n are both valid solutions, and so 3nCn and 3nC2n are identical terms. Best Regards Old Maths Guy

    Keep Maths Extension?

Fitzpatrick 3 unit is an excellent book solidly covering the extension 1 work. Keep. 2u Maths in Focus. Get or keep because you need to follow the work your class is doing. While Grove is limited, its explanations of the basics is pretty clear - good if you want to get ahead. It is certainly a...

    Keep Maths Extension?

With practice you'll minimize silly mistakes so don't worry too much there. The main thing is you are comfortably passing so in reference to your main concern, I would suggest keeping at Extension 1 at least until the trial. By then, you'll know whether to keep or drop. What textbook(s) are you...

    Keep Maths Extension?

The more obvious questions are: - How are you going in 2 unit Mathematics? If you are going really well then that is a better indication that you should continue with Extension 1 than one poor extension 1 result. If you are not doing that well in 2 unit mathematics, then maybe you should look at...

Projectile motion along one dimension -- urgent help needed!

The trick to this is making the maths simple by choosing the right frames of reference. For this make t=0 when the 2nd stone is thrown, and make the height of the building be y=0. For the second stone, y=(-gt^2)/2-20t For the first stone, at t=0, y'=-g and y=(-g)/2 and so...
