What would get me a HSC mark of around 90? I am ranked 12th in my school, out of 90ish... school is ranked around 160

From personal experience, better safe than sorry. I think that solves your question (Yes, you should double differentiate to prove its max, or u can use the other method where you sub values into the first derivative)

What I do is try to race through the whole paper. (i.e. skipping stuff that I don't know) Then the left over time, I try to do what I didn't do(no more than 12-15 min when trying to work out question 6 and 7). If I've done all that I'd rather check what I've done a pick up a few marks in silly...

That's not a good idea.... Maybe you should just plan out a structure for every essay and memorize that?

I've heard the scaling of the top .5% in standard is equivalent to the top 25% in Adv.
