A guy I know claims to have attained a download speed of 3MB/s (yes, megabytes not bits). Is this even possible on an Optus cable connection or was there an error in the software estimating the download speed?

I've seen it on Bigpond cable. I was using the internet in the wee hours of the morning, that might be part of the reason why. I have yet to see it on Optus, though.

Ask him whether this 3MB/s download rate was sustained.

I can get 2-3mb/s on iprimus adsl. (you have to be within 1.5km of an exchange though)
It supposedly can go to 6mb/s but ive never got that.

Yea.
In quoting these speeds, you have to be careful to use MB (bytes) and Mb (bits)...
iPrimus ADSL can only go up to 6Mbps which is equivalent to about 750KB/s.

and ADSL2+ is only within a 2km radius from the exchange. The drop further than that is quite significant.

By 4mb and 6mb do you mean 4MBps or 4Mbps (i.e. 500KB/s)
Coz I highly doubt that you can get 6MB/s on cable (i.e. 48Mbps = T3 speed)...just wondering whether 3MB/s is possible though - doesn't seem likely imo though.

No its not possible. Under what conditions did this person get 3MB/s download?

um... www.yahoo.com downloads at 700 - 1mb/s but I've got 3 off the PC-cillin wesbite for their virus scanner. Also my friend got 15mb/s once... not consistent ofcourse, but it chewed up about 20% of their download.
Sustained 3MB/s?

Not sure...but it's not even possible at 2am is it?? ... when there's absolutely no traffic and no contention?
I have a feeling that the download had already started before he pressed "start", inflating the speed. If not, the file was probably already cached.
