I thought scaling and aligning were the same...
Nope... totally different processes.
Aligning is what happens to your raw mark on the exam paper... the Board of Studies does all this with relative stuff and putting you into your respective bands. Scaling is done by UAC and basically nothing scales UP, except for MX2 and freaky languages, like Classical Greek Extension and the odd few courses with tiny cohorts.
In summation:
Scaling is for your atar and only done by UAC
Moderation/Aligning is by BoS and if for your HSC marks and results you get on your certificate.
P.S. Maths Extension two is aligned insanely well... like if you saw a few examples (if you havn't before) your mouth will hit the ground. AND it scales up for your atar (as long as your not like the very bottom of the state). This is why you'll see a lot of the people getting very high atars doing MX2 (it makes life easier in terms of getting an awesome atar).
