Legal Study Advice for all my fellow Legal Studies student
-Learn as many case studies, statistics, legislation, documentaries and media articles as possible. They can really enhance your answer and has been specified numerous times by the BOSTE marking center as a vital and integral part of any A range response.
-When talking about cases do not do any recounting/story-telling. All the markers want to know is how the case contributes to the argument you are making. Give one brief sentence on the case scenario and then move onto evaluation e.g. has this case demonstrated whether law reform has been effective? ineffective? how? When talking about High Court precedents, you might even want to skip the case scenario and just provide the precedent e.g in Dietrich v the Queen (1992)- the precedent was that there is no automatic right to legal representation in Australia.
-Do not spend majority of your time on making notes but rather learning the content and gaining a holistic understanding of it so that you can easily write a response to any question..
-Be prepared for any exam question. Don't think that they will only ask general ones. NO. They can ask anything contained within the syllabus and even focus on something very specific. e.g. my trials were based on how jury trials achieve justice and many people who skipped learning juries due to lack of time were screwed. Also 2014 HSC they gave us a stimulus for crime.
-If you are running out of time before an exam look at the themes and challenges because it very VERY likely one of them will be selected to form half the question. Think over what you would talk about if they ask e.g. about law reform (bail, mandatory sentencing, juries).
-If you are a visual learner like me then draw mind maps, write legislation in the air, make acronyms. It really helps you visualize the point to discuss when you are freaking out in an exam
