You can transfer externally. I have a friend who transferred from UTS to USyd.
At usyd there's actually no difference between transferring internally or externally - all students are assessed on the same basis (no preference for whether you are at usyd or not).

Just realized I can also do STAT to increase my chances. Seriously going to consider this.

I've been pretty passionate about law since about year 9. In year 12 I had a change of heart and decided that I wanted to focus more on business. I got offered a cadetship with a pretty respectable accounting firm and ended up accepting that and working there full time. Most firms prefer you undertake a single degree when doing a cadetship, so I stuck to Commerce. I got to work with some lawyers on a company takeover during my time at the firm and that kind of got me thinking that "hey I should be on the other side of the table". The reason why I was initially hesitant about making an application to study Law was because I can appreciate that it's a giant commitment and in order to thrive you really need to want it.

Was in the same position as you two years ago mate. Was working a cadetship at an accounting firm, and decided to make the switch to combine my commerce degree with Law. Turned out to be a great decision.

Nice! Did you go through MQs internal transfer to law? How competitive is it?

Well i did two things. Firstly i transferred internally through MQ, (as i was doing commerce in my first yr), had a gpa of 3.00 and got accepted. However at the same time i also applied through UAC and had commerce/law at mq as my first preference. I ended up getting the UAC offer also, so i ended up taking that and was straight into the course in my second year.

Woww GPA of 3.00?? My GPA slipped pretty badly last semester due to some pretty severe personal stuff but I'm fairly sure I can get it back up to over 3.00 this semester. Made my day. :)

Yer mate as long as you get a GPA of 3.00 you have a good chance. Because you also have to complete a statement as to why you would like to do law in your application form. If you have a well written response your application will be looked upon more favorably.

That is fantastic. I was thinking I needed close to a perfect GPA. Thanks for that mate. :)

How are you finding it so far?

No worries mate, good luck with your application. So far its great. MQ law school is enjoyable, alot of great social events, a new unit that allows us to get an internship with a law firm as credit for our degree, and PAL sessions for all of the law units that allow you to stay on top of your work. I really recommend it, and has complemented my other degree well that being accounting.

A queston for all, is there really that much difference in the end between a law degree from Macquarie or a law degree from UNSW, in terms of job opportunities?

It depends, some firms give it weight whilst other firms dont really care. However, what really matters with law (and most degrees for that matter) is that you have good marks and extra cirriculars. If you are averaging P's and have no extra cirriculars, its going to be difficult to find work, regardless of whether your degree is from UNSW or Usyd.

Some say yes, some say no. At the end of the day - your law degree is what you make it to be.

On the conference call with a client and bosses:

Client: [rather distressed] I've been unlawfully fired, and would like to sue for unfair dismissal.
Boss: What happened?
Client: My supervisor told me that I was being fired for being ineffective, dishonesty, and performing tasks inefficiently. But it's all bullshit
Me: How do you know that, m'am?
Client: It's because I smoke, and took a few smoke breaks a day.
Me: Where abouts did you work, m'am?
Client: NSW Cancer Council

Me: *facepalm*
Boss: *bashes head onto desk*

lol that's hilarious. I don't think you can get stupider than that... That's like a cop who goes around hijacking cars on the weekend.

may be a good idea for [procrastinating] law students to post up rants/thoughts about their day, so prospective law students know not to do law.

Thursday september 1

it's the first fucking day of spring, and i've been at home all day trying to do my criminal law essay. And procrastinating on bos. This 2000 word behemoth is due at 4pm tomorrow, and i'm on 400 words.

Fuck my life.
hahaahhahahaahahhhaahhahahahah sucked in!
