GSA-4167B Version DL12 Firmware Update

To update the firmware of the GSA-4167B please refer to the following instructions:

Note: Not following the subsequent update instructions explicitly will result in
permanent damage to your drive, for which LG will not be responsible.

This firmware update is for drives with original firmware versions below DL11.
The drives must be original LG branded drives with the DVD Writer model number
GSA-4167B(no OEM units).

If you have an OEM unit, branded with another manufacturers name,
please contact that manufacturer for support and firmware updates.

This firmware update is for use only on PC¡¯s with Windows XP, Windows 2000,
Windows Millennium Edition (ME), or Windows 98.

¡Ø Critical Instructions: (to be followed carefully)

1. Connect the drive as ¡°master¡± by it self, on the secondary IDE controller
with no other device on the same IDE cable, making note to set the jumper
on the back of the drive to the¡°master¡±position.

2. Download the file GSA-4167DL12(EW).ZIP to a folder of your choice.
This download includes this ¡°Read me(ew)¡± text file,
as well as the GSA4167DL12.EXE program, which will auto-update your drive's firmware.

3. Close all other programs including: screen saver, antivirus and/or power-down programs.
(If these programs are not closed, they will try to engage the PC,
during the update process, thus interrupting the update and damaging the drive).

4. Check the drive to ensure that there is no disk in the tray before you start
the update procedure.

5. Go into the folder with the update file and double click the GSA4167DL12.EXE program
and click the ¡°update¡± button (red). Once the update is complete,
you will see ¡°Firmware Update Complete¡± and the button will become green
and advise you to reboot the system.
You will need to reboot your PC.

The update will be complete, after you reboot your system.

WARNING: Do not open any programs or start any system functions during the update,
as they will interfere with data transfer and damage the drive.
Do not cancel the operation once it has been started or the drive will
become permanently damaged, as a result.

So, i have 2 dvd drives, one as secondary master and the other as secondary slave, my dvd burner has drive letter d: and my dvd reader has drive letter e:

so as d is before e does that mean the dvd burner is a secondary master drive and the dvd reader is a secondary slave drive
and also as relating to instruction one does that mean i'll just have to unplug my dvd reader in the process of installing the firmware update?

cheers

Secondary refers to the IDE pin connector thats NOT the furthest from the motherboard.

Motherboard ------------- | ----------- |
(1) (2)

I THINK

The drive letter isnt always an indication of primary/secondary.

You can tell by the pin bracket. On the back of your DVD drive, there should be 3/4 pins labelled M, S M/S or something similar. M=Master and that is where the pin should be if it is your master device.

Yes I think all you have to do is unplug the reader but check the pin first.

Someone correct me :p Don't take my word for it.

I don't know about the letter assortment analogy. But you can find out which is which at start up or in Bios. Secondary master should be D: Secondary slave E:.

Most DVD firmware releases just "improve compatibility" with different brands of media, not introduce ground breaking features like doubling the reading and burning speed.

Yes they can..but when its a minor release from 1.1 to 1.2, most DVD firmware releases just "improve compatibility" with different brands of media.

You can always read the readme that comes with the firmware to see what was actually changed.

No, the firmware is inside the DVD burner.
