About wireless router (1 Viewer)

My g/f got from USA the D-Link DI540 Wireless (g) router.... we got the transformer, etc and set it up last nite. It works

Now, what Im not sure about (because the instruction manual is pretty poor) Is weather the "wireless" means internet is wireless (which it is, the laptop now gets internet) but also, can u do file/printer sharing? How are u meant to set this up or should it already be set up? I wasnt sure how to go about looking into files from the other comps. on the network ...

If the laptop can already wirelessly access the internet through the router, then it should be on the same network as the other computers. You should be able to see the other computers as long as you've configured file and printer sharing correctly.

but i also got a wireless router.. like Lord Ac, the manual is pretty sketchy...

it works and all, but i was wondering if i should of uninstalled my adsl software before i plugged it all in.. or doesn't it matter?

I assume you're on BigPond or some other ISP that has heartbeat software?

If its working, then its safe to say it doesn't matter!

It can... I know that telstra cable can cause problems. Can't be bothered going into details (will if anyone wants them specifically), but you're better off uninstalling the heartbeat software and letting the router manager it all by itself, or else you might end up having to have a computer on all the time which, imho, makes a router entirely unnessacary due to software internet connection sharing solutions out there.

Ok ... havent had a chnace to employ your Murf however there is a problem:

Indeed is it Bigpond internet, and the internet works when the other computer is off ... HOWEVER, when on the internet and on any instant messenger service there are slight dropouts for a second or whatever ... not noticeable while browsing but when on instant messenger you are DISCONNECTED .... this is annoying and happens every few minutes. EVEN THOUGH the signal strength is "excellent"

Anyone know why?

What the hell is this heartbeat thing? How would I unistall it and why is that a good idea?

The heartbeat, as far as i can understand, is similar to the "Ping" command that you can use through your command prompt. Basically the ISP's server "pings" your computer once every 5 mins or so (roughly) just to see if you are still there. If it doesnt get a reply it disconnects you. I suppose they put it there, so they dnt waste bandwidth that they could be using elsewhere.

Some routers might block this heartbeat through a hardware firewall. So the server doesnt get a reply, and presumes you aren't there so you get disconnected.

At least thats what i understand, could be wrong. Lol.

i think i had the same problem about file/printer sharing a few months ago so i emailed D-Link directly, heres what i got

Dear King,

Thank you for your e-mail.
You do not need to set up anything on the router in regards to
file/printer sharing on local network. Router is only getting involved
when you are accessing the Internet. For local traffic (between the two
computers) you are not using the router, you are using it just like a
hub (physical connection between the computers).
You need to modify some settings in Windows in order to enable
file/printer sharing and make computers to "see" each other on local
network.

my problem was that i wanted to pretty much share files between computers and shit. im not sure if it'll help you in ur case, but it might.

sounds like, if you want to share files, you'll need to run the 'Network Setup Wizard, assuming your running XP.
To access this just click the 'My Network Places' icon on your desktop, and a link should be avaliable on the right hand side - saying somthing like 'Set up a home or small office network). You'll need to do it on all the computers you want to share your files etc with.

Networking and XP
I abosolutey hate windows "printer sharing" features.

Keep in mind you can wireless printer servers.

1. Plug wireless device via usb into your printer.
2. Any PC can print directly TO IT, without having to bypass another PC or Router.

and then share a folder.... :S

and same with Printer?

Just make sure that you label your Shares with a decent name that is readable for Older Software.
