Anyone doing actuarial studies currently or thinking of doing actuarial studies in uni, do you need to do 4 unit math in year 12 to do well in uni? Would 3 unit math in year 12 be enough to do well in actuarial?

you're gonna end up learning the 4u stuff and much more than that anyway so might as well make it easier for yourself and take it in hsc if you can

Yeah of course best case scenario would be to do 4u.. ik this sounds stupid but hypothetically if I wasn't to do 4u would it be like a huge struggle in uni like how much more time would you have to put in to learn the extra 4u stuff

plenty of people do it so it's possible, it shouldn't take too long:

- mechanics - well this isn't really a uni math topic unless u do physics so kinda irrelevant

- integration - not too long, it's really just a extension of what you do in 3u; slightly more substitution, and the other two main methods of partial fractions and integration by parts are pretty simple

- proof - for acturial you wouldn't need this topic but it's probably the most time consuming

- vectors - again not too long, provided you have a solid foundation in 3u vectors this is just extending things into 3d from 2d and plus in uni you go over more complex things like cross product that isn't in 4u syllabus anyway

- complex numbers - can take a while to get used to, but overall not too hard if you're familiar with vectors and trig

so yeah it's not gonna be too much of a stretch to catch up to people who did 4u especially because acturial doesn't use proof and that's probably the hardest part of 4u. if you're pretty familiar with 3u content it'll just be building on top of it, although at a much faster pace than if you took 4u so if you're ever concerned then you can always self study 4u textbook before uni; although by the time u start your second math subject at uni you'll be at an equal level to people who took 4u in hs anyway.

unless u take discrete math but for “math 1(a)” etc usually no proofs

unsw and macquarie are the only ones that offer it in nsw i believe

first two math units at unsw will be a struggle but its probably doable. less so an issue of content, more so problem-solving ability

maybe not many proofs in finals but maths intrinsically is basically deriving things
