Yeah, I don't plan on remaining the dial-up mod forever. I'm currently looking for a 512/128 plan with at least 4GB per month. Obviously I don't want metered upstream, but I'm not much of a gamer so that side isn't important - I tend to hoard media (yeah, I leech).

The two plans I'm considering are Internode PADSL-512-Green and iiNet Bliink 512. Both charge $80 per month for three month contracts, with favourable specs.

Does anyone have something to tell me about the service of either Internode or iiNet? You see, because the iiNet plan is a bit cheaper (for connection) and they offer 6GB per month I'm leaning that way, but it's the service that will sway me.

Second question: Most ISPs offer to sell a modem with their installation fee, but I have a feeling that they're expectably overpriced? Where can I get a good modem cheaply, keeping in mind that I expect to connect it to a router (I'm preparing to build a three terminal network for my parents).

Any help here is overwhelmingly appreciated. Winston, plug me!

check out the forums on whirlpool and see what others have to say. best info you can get is from people actually using the ISP, rather than what people have heard somewhere.

:p the only time you find out about the service of ISPs on whirlpool fora is when it's BAD.

DODO = NONO

iiNet is honestly the way to go

ezzy's correct only users can judge what's a good service, a few of my friends and family friends use iiNet it is extremely a good service, down times are rare, and it's a fair service, in terms of modem, my friend bought a ADSL/Router modem which is extremely good for all in one i'll find out what it is, but it's a good all in one bundle for a modem.

ok i just found out the brand of the modem is Billion and it cost approx 180, this is a good offer with in mind a standard router cost around that price anyways.

i also forgot to recommend that Ozforce is good isp as well
should be around 80 a month as well for unlimited downloads and uploads at 512k/128k

check their site

http://www.ozforces.com/

i forgot to add that please don't assume 512k/128k actually means 512 kilobytes per second

512k is in reference to 512 kilobits, note the lowercase "k", just telling u, cause i know some people think it's 512 kilobytes, only if it says "KB" then it's in reference to kilobytes, 512k is approximately 64 Kilobytes, as one byte contains 8 bits. so divide 512/8 = 64.

I think you mean lower case 'b', since there's no assignation to upper case 'K' :p But yes, I know about the "misleading" notation.

I've heard dodgy stuff about ozforces...

remember, it's not only the ISP, you have to know what your ISP uses too...

like telstra lines, comindico, etc...

comindico is C R A P

Lexicographer is right. It doesn't matter if it is KB or kB - what matters is:

kB or KB = kilobytes
kb or Kb = kilobits

B = bytes
b = bits

:)

Billion ADSL Modem, with router functionality (USB and ethernet).

Model: BIPAC-711 CE

It's about $169 from SydneyMetroComputers - but retails for about $180 (see Winston's post).

Umm...I thought everyone has the "Billion" Modem. That was one of the modem popular and famous ADSL modems. Cheap and reliable with heaps of features.

I wouldn't recommend Internode unless you want to use flatrate.

In order of what I would choose:

Ozforces (cuz they are cool :p)
Swiftel
iinet

Telstra.

I also heard some dodgy things about Ozforces. As fatmuscle said, u have to know what your ISP uses too. DODO use commendico service = CRAP! Bigblue (unlimited 256kb for $54) uses Telstra service which is great. Im with them and so far so good. Check with whirlpool forums.

With the modems, i would rather go for an Alcatel speedtouch modem (ethernet). Theirs HEAPS of them in ebay, which u could pickup for under $150 depending on what type you want. Telstra also supplies these modems to their ADSL customers. You can also get the home version (very cheap in ebay) and hack it to a Pro version (very easy). Thats what i did. :)

i'm not sure on the other companies but i might be wary with iinet

a while back they had horrible amounts of downtime

while the last couple of months have been near perfect, i was on the verge of shifting to a new ISP when it was quite common to have a couple of hours of downtime in the evenings and at night every 2 days

I'm on iiNet and service is pretty good, only thing was a period of downtime when they had to do major upgrades, but all is running fine now.

I believe they are with Telstra, rather than Comindico.

"Telstra has again admitted it was at fault in denying a customer access to
iiNet ADSL whilst subsequently signing him up to BigPond Broadband ADSL"

But this news story is completely unrelated.

My hunch would be Telstra.
