As yr11 ends i'm faced with a bit of a dilemma, I'm first out of 60 in standard English without too much effort, should i move up to advanced? keep in mind i hate English (pointless subjective crap) and would rather not subject myself to more complex torture.

Will everyone elses rubbish marks in standard hold me back much? I'll be doing Ext2 maths, physics, engineering as well next year, and ill be in top 3 rank in all of them, is it necessary to move up to advanced? Also if i move up i'm stuck there :/

You're not allowed to move up from standard to advanced english but you can go the other way around though.

I'm going to assume for some reason that you're school is bending the rules a bit. Sometimes coming 1st in standard is better than coming average in advanced because your final mark will just depend on how YOU perform in the HSC, so if you deserve a high mark then you'll get a high mark.

I suggest you stay in standard because you obviously know what you are doing and advanced english is a different course altogether.

Haha, well keep in mind my school is run by alot of foolish people :rofl2:

They said after Prelims you can move up, and the guy who organises it all said to everyone "Coming last in advanced is better than first in standard".

Well i'm glad to hear that, although i like Shakespeare i dislike most very old texts.

Ah i see.

You do have to get a higher raw mark than advanced kids to get the same aligned mark, so make sure you ace english :)

Is the magnitude in extra marks i need to beat someone in advanced always the same, or is it relative to the mark i get?

For example is it like: "If i want to beat someone in advanced who got 60, i need to get 70, but if i want to beat someone in advance who got 80 i need to get 85." eg difference needed changes relative to the marks.

or

"If i want to beat someone in advanced who got 60, i need to get 70, but if i want to beat someone in advance who got 80 i need to get 90." eg difference needed to beat them stays the same no matter the aim.

i was 2nd in standard in year 11 ( prolly from fluke.. woulda been a crappier rank if i stayed for year 12)

i moved up after some begging and i dont regret it, it can save you if you need a atar/uai

btw i sucked at english too and it is my least favourite subject, but the advanced course is more interesting than standard.

If you're talking about aligned marks (the marks reported by the Board), it's relative. It will be different for each band.

If you're talking about scaled marks (used to calculate your ATAR), there is no difference between Standard and Advanced, because they're scaled exactly the same.
