for 4u the best thing u can do is look at all the major work text types, what’s been over done, what hasn’t been done before. also read the hsc markers notes, they often comment on cliches which you should avoid (on nesa website).

also look at your strengths when it comes to creative writing- are you better at writing about your own world or fantasy. play at your strengths!! markers these days seem to love personal stories so think about your life + experiences + those of people around you. while you’re writing also think about what you’re trying to say/critique about our world.

for actual practical tips: read a LOT! look up short stories especially and read through heaps!
any time you get an idea jot it down immediately (even if it’s bad) and then work on your creative piece. once you’re done mark it, fix what you’re missing and apply this to every future creative.
also MAKE SURE you play around with form and language techniques. form/layout is a MASSIVE thing markers look at lately, be experimental! (by this I mean things like diptych structure, or arranging the story in parts etc).

Star writing straight away, go way over the word limit. Then you can keep the good stuff.
thank you both so much!! your advice will definitely help me :)
