I was taught that a square root of any number, is any number tha multiplies itself to give the required number, hence sqrt 36 = -6 and 6.. but -x is not a solution for sqrt x^2..... why?

I disagree. Even in 2unit root 36 is +/- 6, because you must take BOTH values into account for calculus etc

I suppose you could argue that the negative sign always disappears.

sqrt(x²) = sqrt(x*x) = sqrt(x) * sqrt(x) = (sqrt(x))² = +x

look, by definition, sqrt(x) is always positive.

if you start with nothing you end up with nothing

0 * 0 = 0
0 / 0 = undefined

but then why is anything multiplied by 0 = 0??
shouldn't 2 * nothing = 2 cause you have 2 to begin with??

Hey, think of the relation f(x) = sqrt(x). It has domain x>=0 and range y>=0.

However, a square root really has two solutions: the positive one is the 'principal' square root, and that is the one we use commonly. The other is just as valid, though.
