Sure he may well end up with a major in physics

But its too early to decide.

You have people dropping their majors left right and center in their last few years because they failed to do their research about job prospects or weren't interested in the subject.

So i argue, presuming his only in 1st year (1st semester even) that one course (the first physics course) and finding it somewhat interesting/ doing well in it does not constitutes good consideration for a major.

If he does i commend him for his pursuit of science, especially given the Australia's lack of investment in it.

Why do the call the major Physical Science instead of Physics?
If you only do a BSci degree then you only get a Xical Science degree if its not one of the more specialised facets.
If you do w/ Honours or BSci Adv you get the actual X degree.

But i think it only holds for Adv opposed to the standard because your expected to do honours....

So if you do it in the normal science degree, you get the Physical Science major... that sucks lol

Well you could always do Honours to resolve the title issue if its such a concern for you. If you are doing a straight Sci degree (Adv, med etc) it would be pointless not to do Honours as there is no job market for just a regular degree. Although the same can be said for Honours Grads. There unemployed/underemployed PHD grads.

The governments wants to push out more science graduates but has never increased investment in scientific research.

It's not a "concern" lol it just looks better as physics... I think anyway.
Yeh the job market isn't really that great, but I just want to do it out of interest.

If it's just purely out of interest, you would be happy to just get a title.

Understandably if you want to make a career out of this you'll want to hoard as many titles as you can.

1 subject =/= doing the major.

5 bucks you'll decide its not for you after next semester
No I will major in it. The only chance I won't is if I major in maths instead. Though if I can do that I would probably double major.
Though, I am only first year, so idk, but I can't see me doing anything else.

Fair enough, but you should try other courses out before you conclude that this is the one for you. Just my opinion.
But if your so adamant in Physics then even if you try the other you'll coax yourself into thinking you made the right decision.
