This idea was established by the 'Al-hayat' Arabic Newspaper managing director Mr. Omar Al-shadi. The purpose of this idea is to basically establish a media watch centre for the Arab Community where everybody keeps a watchful eye on the Australian media and their references to our community. The Purpose of this organisation is to:

* To monitor what is being published by the Australian Media regarding the Arabs, both positively and negatively
* Establish strong Relationships with the media and Actively Encouraging Arab Students to study, media and journalism at university.
* Establish Strong ties with human rights organisations to combat racism and discrimination.


We believe that the centre of this organisation will be University students. This is why I have been given an opportunity to gather Arab speaking University Students from across Sydney (About 100) to attend the opening of this idea and promote this campaign.

The centre requires a lot of support to launch this campaign, so that it can adequately defend our community.

When: 22nd of December 2004.

I call for such an organisation to be set up in australia, and for us to complain that we're not allowed to practice our customs in their nations and are forced to practice theirs thru this.

Thankyou for clearing that up for me man, before this thread i was really confused. THat goes to show how ignarant some people are, and how many peple make biased judgements without actually knowing the act.I think tattoface is a high offender i this category.

I plead to peopledo not judge each other by first impression (although this is human instinct, unfortunately), rather, explore the beauty of each others uniqueness.

Previously i have made the error in judgig that women as so condoned by themuslim faith, obviously i was not informaed, and just went by what I saw. People please do not make the same error. Learn from each others mistakes

Sounds like a good idea, although I'm not sure if having organisations specifically for each culture or grouping is ideal. Personally I think it'd be better to have a single entity which ensured that all cultures, etc, were portrayed fairly and without bias. Then again I guess that's highly unlikely (Or maybe even impossible) due to the tendency for bias in society at large.

Certainly an interesting idea though, and if it helps protect people's rights then it can't be bad.

i think the whole idea is a good one. i reckon all communities should set up something similar

come election time, all of them should work to catch politicians lying to the public
like an afghan group would have got fame for enlighting us all about children overboard. All it had to do was to ask John to show us the video images he said he had

I disagree that the arabs are seeing the war from cameras on the other side... has any footage been released of iraqi insurgants accidently killing civilians? because i'm sure it has happened numerous times.

ive seen al-jazeera (from sbs news ) showing americans bulldozing iraqi street stalls and taunting civilians. Dateline reported from arabic sources that a lot of arabs (i think 70% in one poll) were against the hostage takings. the iraqi field reporters were there to document iraqi front line troops waiting for the americans to come, but they didnt show what happened next. i saw that arab reporter in front of a group of civilians just before it blew up after being hit by an american missile- that stirred lots of anger!

i think this sort of Organisation will be a divider among australians and act to futher segregate diffrent the diffrent groups that make up our society

this seems like some campaign to beat up any possible negative press that arab australians will get warrented or otherwise to create mistrust of non arab/muslim australians

here are a few pointers to clear up a few things and try to help situations and tensions:
*only 18% of muslims are arabs (peoples living on the arabian peninsula speaking arabic) and not all are muslims (maronite christians, druze and syrian orthodox are quite popular in the Levant)
*Israel has to dissolve into a secular Palestinian republic and help build relations with Jews and Palestinians to stop the carnage and corruption on both sides
*Islamic fundamentalists must not carry out sharia by themselves in countries that do not support it and should be deported from Western nations in order to stop terrorism effectively
*Large Companies should be banned from buying smaller ones pioneering uses of alternatives to petroleum as use is only giving money to countries such as Saudi Arabia which oppressively rules its people through extremist use of Sharia (islamic law) and carries out public executions and amputations for adulterors, thieves, apostates, homosexuals, etc.
*Russia should let Chechnya to become its own country
*Non-citizens and perpetrators of anti-Semitic violence, terrorism and other crimes should be deported from countries such as France with Muslim populations numbering 5-6 million which are too large for the government to manage
*Countries with large immigrant intakes (France, Holland) should refuse entry for those whose countries do not reciprocally have the same policies and immigrants should only take up a minor part of the population due to loss of culture and tradition in those countries.
*Westernisation should be heavily monitered and discouraged in countries where McDonalds, etc. takes away local traditions, etc.
*Violence against Muslim women in countries such as Australia, UK, France should be able to reported easier with restraint.
*Israel and US compaines need to be boycotted from sponsoring Israeli army exploits in killing Palestinians
*Countries such as Sudan should not have to "Arabise" and lead to prospects of killing thousands of indigenous tribes due to refusal of converting to Islam
*Muslims need to learn that there is scientifically no afterlife and there is a "real world"and a "spiritual world"
*More liberal interpretations of Islam should be supported worldwide to ensure a decrease in Islamic terrorism and extreme interpretation of Sharia.
*Jews, Christians and Muslims need to learn anout each others religions and cultures more often to ensure that they are not as alien as they seem.
*Countries which have corporal and capital punisment, slavery and oppression of human rights (ie Saudi Arabia) need to be boycotted.

It may take a subjective view but it may or may not help thx 4 lettin me putting in my 2 cents.

i agree, i beleive that this organisation will be used as a front to express hatred and amnosity towards both sides. i cant see how this organisation will surivive when the government already has the job of monitoring the media, making sure descrimination and racism is not seen on tv. granted some tainting/ propoganda is done but as far as i know this is not illegal.
therefore if an organisation such as this decided to do a job it deemed necessary, it would not find any illegal activity in the media in regards to racism towards arabs that the government has not already uncovered. so this organisation will not be doing a good job by bringing racism to the attention of the law,

but what it will do is stir up feelings of hate as the Arab community will feel it is being decriminated against[ofcource fueled by information from this organisation] the westerners will feel that the Arabs are trying to supress free speech by harassing men in the media who have done nothing illegal and then the arabs will feel targeted by western society and may retaliate

that is one way i see this turning into a "situation",
basically it seems like a good idea, but perhaps a bit missinformed

btw iam just going on what i sense generally from the news, paper and general legal knowledge, iam sure iam wrong on atleast one point so feel free to correct me

how about to avoid people thinking it will be an issue because its arabs, and also turn down the argument about it being arabs just looking out for themselves
how about just create a media watchdog that watches out for all kinds of racism/ descrimination, not just that imoposed on arabs
so like a big watchdog organisation where people of the community give tipoffs or send things in when they feel that a particular cultural group is being targeted or descriminated against, that way white people, or as u said the chinese wont feel excluded as they will now be infact protected by this organisation
