a friend of mine who doesnt have the net asked me about art colleges... i have no idea about them so i thought i would ask you...
What do you need to do to get in?
What college is the best?
Do they select based on talent or your V.A. HSC mark??
and if anyone knows of something that may help i would appreciate it...
thanx all

There are a few schools that I know such as:
  1. COFA (College of Fine Arts, UNSW, Paddington Campus), get in by UAI, 2006 cut-off for Fine Arts is 75
  2. SCA (Sydney College of the Arts, Usyd, Rozzelle Campus), get in by {UAI+Interview+Porfolio Presentation}.
  3. School of Contemporary Art (UWS, Penrith Campus), get in like SCA
  4. Sydney Gallery School (Meadowbank TAFE), get in by {Drawing test+Interview+Porfolio Presentation}
  5. National Art School (I dunno much about it)
It's hard for me to say which one is the best though COFA was my first preference.

I know that at the Sydney College of Art they'll look at your portfolio and then you go through an interview process. As a general rule you need to have a UAI over 70 to have a real chance of getting in (their website says so).

For the National Art School, entry is also by portfolio, interview, and on the apllication there's a questionnaire you have to fill out. They don't look at your HSC mark at all - it's all based on your talent (which should be evident in your portfolio) and creativity (that's what the interview is for).

CoFA will select you purely on your UAI, so as long as you reach the cut-off then you're in.

What I know about those colleges comes from what I've read on the websites and what others have told me. The 3 that I've mentioned are all really good, but I guess it depends on what you want to get out of it.

The National Art school is a much more traditional art college and places a strong emphasis on drawing (which is compulsory throughout the duration of the 3 year course).

CoFA gives you much more freedom and helps develop your own style. My teachers who went there told me that you don't have anyone telling you how to paint or draw, it's something you develop yourself whilst in the course, this way everyone's style ends up different.

I don't know much about SCA but I know they offer lots of different electives, and my teacher said they have a great performing arts faculty.

Hope I was of some help:)

COFA doesn't. It has art theory and media stuff on offer too, plus it's a campus of UNSW. SCA is attached to USyd, so there's the opportunity to grab non-VA subjects at USyd's main campus.

Most "art colleges" are attached to larger institutions per se. Even here at UOW we offer a BCA maj. Visual Arts or Visual Arts and Graphic Design as part of the Faculty of Creative Arts, which is not a separate college, just a school within a faculty.

If you're looking at those types of careers.... you'd be best to look at -

B Visual Arts- Media Arts (Sydney College of the Arts, USYD)

or possibly a Visual Communications course.
